Advantages: The DVD looks and sounds terrific...every element falls into place beautifully... Disadvantages: those who hate Romeo & Juliet probably wont bother to give it a chance...
When I was growing up, my parents had two great musicals on the same tape---WEST SIDESTORY and GREASE. My mother knew I would enjoy GREASE more than WEST SIDESTORY and when I tried to watch it, I wasn't really impressed with it, and all I remembered from it was it starting with an aerial shot of Manhattan. I wasn't until this year that I saw WEST SIDESTORY in all its glory, after I was recommended to buy the DVD by a very good friend. Some of my favorite musicals have been MY FAIR LADY, 1776, and the SOUTH PARK movie (weird collection, I know), but I was absolutely overwhelmed by the sheer power and energy of WEST SIDESTORY. And now I'm glad to be writing a review on it, as I tell you about the film---and the experiance I had while watching it.
First of all, I know everyone out there doesn't like musicals, but this is ...
Advantages: Sensational cinematography Disadvantages: Some people might not like Hindi songs
numbers in the film, but she does take the lead on the climactic R?n?B piece Butterfly.
I also have to give full credit to James McAvoy as Jay. He did a wonderful west country accent, not a trace of his own Scottish showing through, and managed to play his character exceedingly well. Jay is a character that grows on you. While Geena is all flamboyance and flair, Jay is subtle and sensitive, revealing a passionate side as the movie progresses.
Most of the other characters in the film are minor in relation to the main story, but all actors played their parts well, both British and Indian.
The style of the movie is unique. Think Westside story goes east and you?re partway there. The songs follow the traditional bollywood style of breaking into song at any moment. Although all the dialogue in the film is in English, all the musical numbers ...
Advantages: Fantastic dance scenes. Disadvantages: Some of the music

I would like to say this is a modern day Romeo and Juliet and I suppose it is, if you think back to when Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet, but in fact the film is now 44 years old and it was nominated for 11 Oscars which it won 10 of.
West SideStory (Stage show), premiered at the Rivoli Theatre in New York in 1957, where it had a very successful run of 77 weeks. After its successful time on the stage, the movie went into production in August 1960, the full cast having to complete 2 months of gruelling rehearsals prior to production. So look out next year as it will be the Golden Anniversary of West SideStory and I should imagine they will re-release a special edition to celebrate it.
Originally the movie version was only going to take 3 weeks to make, but instead it took months and Premiered in ...
