Lindsay Lohan first appeared on our screens in Parent Trap many moons ago. But with Mean Girls she got renowned and in America she saw this along with successes like 'Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen' a chance to hit theceleb market in more ways than one... with this her debut album 'Speak!' But dont be fooled by the packaging as though there are some honey sweet pop tunes its mainly bitter teen angst! Heres what I thought...
FIRST
Guitars open the album and this song. This is a real rock chick romp Avril Lavigne would be proud of. Lindsay can properly sing and she can certainly rock. Well I am shocked. I like the fact theres an electric beat under this... yes this is good. 6/5
NOBODY 'TIL YOU
Here we have more melodic lovey dovey lyrics "til you there was nothing but lonely nights, sacrifice" this is the sorta stuff Avril should be producing because this is really really catchy and instant. It follows the rock pop formula but it has something extra too. 5/5
SYMPTOMS OF YOU
Its ballad time, but this is brilliant! Very piano lead verses and then rocky guitar chorus's. Lyrically its a little teeny bopper but then thats who she wants to aim to too. "I'm not ill, I dont need to take a pill." 3/5
SPEAK
Title track starts with electro beats and whispers "speak up, speak straight... from your heart". The guitars are still there but not so much. This is a very funky electro pop tune and possibly one of my favs on the album. Its very 'everyone' friendly rock, electro, pop fans the lot. 6/5
OVER
The first UK single (Rumours was out in rest of world ages ago) its a semi ballad semi rocky affair. It catchy and it shows shes not some pop princess, well a typical one. It is full of teen angst so it will probably sell bucket loads! Good tune. 4/5
SOMETHING I NEVER HAD
A very acoustic ballad, this isnt middle of the road its quite atmospheric. Its not the best song and you could find this on a Natalie Imbruglia album, if wasnt on this one, its a definate grower. 4/5
ANYTHING BUT ME
Electro pop rock again with this tune. This has something about it too. It could be mediocre but there is something good about it. Drum heavy compared to the rest of the album. This is ANOTHER good tune that Avril could do with. 3/5
DISCONNECTED
This sounds almost Suzanne Vega in style from the opening. Theres some good lyrics "I'm above being under". "my only belief is to belief in faith". This is a nice rocky ballad. Theres some clever effects and stops and starts thrown in ofr a bit of a change. 4/5
TO KNOW YOUR NAME
This really stands out cos is electro R&B pop. This is a song Britney would love to knick. This shows versatility in what has been so far a very very rock pop themed album. This is truely a highlight. Girls Aloud meets Britney... I'm impressed. 6/5
VERY LAST MOMENT IN TIME
Another rock ballad to remind you where the style of this album really lies. This is quite a deep song lyrically "out of the cofusion static and the noise". This is possibly the best ballad on the whole of the album. Almost despairing vocally and featuring an orchestra in places. 5/5
MAGNET
Hmmmm how can I describe this? Electro, rock, pop but its unusual compared to most of this 'in' style of music. I think its the guitar riffs. Very very very very catchy. The electric synths are cool too, as are the occasional vocoder parts! 6/5
RUMOURS
Britney will be spinning in her marital bed with this tune. This is excellent R&B pop all about being famous and wanting 'privacy'. This tune is awesome and sooooooo needs to be released here. this is possibly the best song on the album, but it seems Lindsay has veared away from overtly pop/R&B... shame. 7/5
This is an awesome album, but odd. In some places shes pop and the look inlay and style of the album is. Underneath it all there is however a severe taste of rock and its not what you would expect. A very pleasent surprise. 10/10
Cheers for reading!
