Being a huge fan of "The X Factor" (A UK Entertainment television show), I was a massive fan of the 2006 winner Leona Lewis, & absolutely loved her first single "A Moment Like This".
However, it wasn't until the following November when Leona's album "Spirit" was released, following her hugely successful number one "Bleeding Love", which stayed at the top of the charts for a seven week run.
TRACK LISTING
Bleeding Love
The second single to be released by Leona, this single was the best selling single of 2007, and due to it's international release, was also the best selling single of 2008. It has reached the top spot in an incredible 34 countries - and you can see why. It's a brilliant track, perfectly suited to Leona's voice, but with a tune and a sound that anyone would like. Young and the old alike are bound to enjoy this song, and I think that is what guaranteed its success. It also has a different sound to it - not the usual poppy song you expect from X Factor winners (and losers), but not a huge ballad either. It was a perfectly written single for Leona and I give this song a === 10/10 ===
Whatever It Takes
Slightly similar to 'Bleeding Love' - and just as good. This song has a more 'fun' feel to it instead of the sad genre running through 'Bleeding Love', but it has the same beat to it. I think people were expecting an album full of dull ballads from Leona, which would have showed off her voice but would have been boring and depressing to listen to. This song shows Leona's amazing vocal ability but also makes each song different and likeable. Leona has fans of all ages, and I think it is down to songs like this which have built her popularity with younger people. I would give this great song a === 9/10 ===
Homeless
A high impact song with some touching lyrics. Leona doesn't 'belt' this song out, which is a good thing, because it's a song full of emotion and her voice portrays that perfectly. The song begins with the sound of falling rain, and this is definitely a one for lovers of slow, sad songs. Despite it being slow with a depressive nature, it's still rather catchy, and a favourite of mine
from the album. However, I can't see this single ever being released, as I don't think it would be loved by absolutely everyone. I would give this touching song an === 8/10 ===
Better In Time
This song was released and it's easy to see why. Different to 'Bleeding Love' but still has a different 'edge' to it which makes it Leona's. I think Leona's songs have a certain style and edge to them which makes them different from any other - I can't imagine any other singer singing her songs. 'Better In Time' did well in the charts and reached a peak position of No. 2 - ('Better In Time' was held off the top spot thanks to Duffy's 'Mercy'). I don't think the song was good enough to get to No.1 (if I am perfectly honest), however this song has an upbeat edge to it and carries a message about overcoming heartbreak. I think maybe this song was popular not only because it's a good song but because people are amazed at the songs Leona can sing. Admittedly, I have never heard Leona attempt a rock song, but she has the ability to sing all kinds of genres and pull it off brilliantly. I'd give this song an === 8/10 ===
Yesterday
A ballad, but not sung in the usual way ballad's are sung. Again Leona doesn't belt this song out, however there are points in the song where she reaches those high notes trademarked to her. Again, it's a touching song, but different to the style of 'Homeless', which is more emotional and depressing. This song is quite uplifting, as it is a song about hope, and is definitely catchy. Again, not a song that I believe would do brilliantly if it were released, but a good song nevertheless. I'd give it a === 7/10 ===
Take A Bow
Not to be confused with Rihanna's smash hit 'Take A Bow', this song is probably even better than Rihanna's (although I am also a fan of her song 'Take A Bow'). These songs are NOT the same song. I personally feel this song is definitely one of the best from the album - the chorus is high-impact, yet it still has that 'pop' feeling which makes it fun to listen to. A lot of the 'ballads' on the album are upbeat, and that is what makes them so good and unique. This song is excellent and I think it would do well if it were to be released. I'd give this fantastic song a === 9/10 ===
I Will Be
This song has been released in the United States, but not yet in the UK. It has previously been recorded (and was partly written by) Avril Lavigne (and features on one of Lavigne's albums). A gorgeous ballad, this is sure to be a reasonable success (although I can't see it reaching the No.1 spot in the US or over here in the UK). This is a true ballad - different from the others previously mentioned here in this review. It's soft, and it concentrates on Leona's voice rather than the background music. A good track and beautifully written, but I'm just not sure whether it will attract a wide audience. I think this song will do well in the charts but I can't see the majority of children or young teenagers being too interested. Sure, Leona's album isn't soley directed to this age-group, but it is mostly teenagers who go out and buy music (whether downloaded or bought as a CD). I would give this track an === 8/10 ===
Angel
I may be on my own here, but personally, I just don't particularly like this track. It doesn't seem to have a big chorus or any striking verses. It's a fairly nice song, but it doesn't make you think 'This song is great!'. I see it as more of an album-filler. The chorus is Ok, the verses are Ok, and infact, the word 'Ok' seems to sum up this particular track. It's not one of the best! For this reason, I would give this track === 5/10 ===
Here I Am
As with 'Angel', I don't particularly enjoy this track very much. It's not bad, and I'm sure there are millions out there who like it, but I don't think it has the same uniqueness as the tracks 'Bleeding Love' and 'Better In Time'. 'Here I Am' is a good song, but in comparison to the two songs I've just mentioned, I don't think it's very good. I think Leona set herself a very high standard with 'Bleeding Love' and I'm a bit dissappointed with this song. I'm going to give this track a === 4/10 ===
I'm You
This song has a kind of R&B feel to it, I can imagine an R&B artist singing this song. It's a decent song, and again shows how talented Leona is at singing any genre of song and it being a great track. 'I'm You' isn't the best, but it's a nice and chilled song, and I would expect most people to like it! I'd give it a === 7/10 ===
The Best You Never Had
I absolutely love this song. I think it's one of the best of the album, along with 'Bleeding Love', 'Better In Time', and 'Take A Bow'. It's a great pop song with an amazing chorus. I think this should be released as it's a great song and sounds like something which would appeal to all audiences. I can imagine teenagers and older people loving this song alike. The background music is catchy, as is the whole song, and it's a personal favourite. I'd give this song a === 9/10 ===
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
I'm not mad on this song, but I don't dislike it, either. Most people will recognise this song - a popular cover version was created by Celine Dion (although it only reached No. 19 in the UK). A slow ballad and not very catchy, but a sweet and gentle song, and will probably be most enjoyed by slightly older people. I'd rate this song a === 6/10 ===
Footprints In The Sand
You might remember this song as the official song of charity Sport Relief for 2008. Some also may identify the song with the Christian prayer "Footprints", from which the song's idea was taken from. A great ballad, this song reminds me of "A Moment Like This", and it is an absolutely beautiful song, with beautiful lyrics to match. I think those who love slow, romantic ballads will adore this song, and it was hugely popular when released in the UK - it peaked at No.2 (it was a double-A side with 'Better In Time'). A gorgeous, emotional ballad, this is one of my favourites, and I would rate this wonderful track a === 8/10 ===
Bonus : A Moment Like This
The first song to be released by Leona Lewis as she won 2006's 'The X Factor', and it flew straight to the top of the charts and consequently became 2006's Christmas No.1. Kelly Clarkson also released this song as the winner of American Idol in the US. 'A Moment Like This' is a great song, a pop-ballad which suited Leona Lewis perfectly, and not only were the public desperate to buy her first single, it was worth buying, too, as it is such a beautiful track, and also has a B-Side with the tracks - 'Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word' and 'Summertime', which she sang during 'The X Factor' competition, and therefore fans of Leona throughout the show were also getting a couple of extras which they would have enjoyed Leona singing during the competition. This song is pop, it's rather cheesy, but it's a great record all the same, and Leona's voice shines in it. I'd give the track a === 9/10 ===.
OVERALL
Overally, "Spirit" is a fantastic album. There are many excellent songs, and only a couple I'm not so keen on. There is not one song on the album that I really dislike, which is quite rare, as usually with an album there is atleast one or two songs which you will loathe. 'Spirit' has been produced with Leona's audience in mind - it will delight anyone who enjoyed Leona Lewis whilst supporting her in 'The X Factor', as it is a collection of ballads and pop songs with a twist of R&B to it, too.
If you didn't like Leona's style in 'The X Factor', then don't expect her album to be totally different. If you don't like pop, or pop ballads, or a mixture of both, it would be a bit pointless of you to buy this album, as the songs really are a mixture of those genres. You won't find any rap or rock here. Think Mariah Carey and a bit of Christina Aguilera and you've got Leona Lewis - she's got a powerful voice but can also produce amazing pop songs.
There is absolutely no doubt Leona is talented - she has an incredible voice - and this album doesn't dissappoint. It's one of my favourite albums of all-time, simply because the songs have been well written and fit Leona's voice perfectly.
If you liked Leona in 'The X Factor', or if you loved her single 'Bleeding Love', you will absolutely love this album. I'd give the album an overall score of == 9/10 == .

Advantages: Slick production, easy to get into, 14 tracks! Disadvantages: A few too many ballads, a couple of tracks could have been removed without issue
