1977 - The Spirit Of Punk - Various Artists

Advantages: Punk, punk and more punk
Disadvantages: No Clash!?!

...I brought this ablum just as I was getting into 70's/80's punk but knew very few of the less mainstream bands (just bands like the clash and the sex pistols), so I bought it. I wasn't disapointed with most of the songs on this compalation but there are a few the weren't my thing. So I got home put it on, the first track was the much over played "Anarchy in the UK", which is the first political punk song but one of the 1st punk bands, so I suppose it had to be on there. The rest of the songs I'd never heard and only reconised some of the bands. There is a real mix of punk from political to punk-pop to Oi! and gives you a real feel for the punk scene at that time. ...this cd features a selection of the best modern punk bands, but also have a couple of old(ish) punk bands. all of the songs are all really good and any fan of punk music should like this album. it features the likes of the offspring, AFI, guttermouth, bodyjar, son of sam and loads more great bands. you will want to listen to this album over and over again. the cd features a few unrealeased tracks, and two music videos by bodyjar and AFI, which play when you put them into your computer, also there is a link to the exclusive punkzilla web page under the special enhanced features. on the insert it features albums by all of the bands on the cd and tells you a little about each one, just to top up on your punk band knowledge. i think this is a great cd and urge people to buy it.... ...Few artists can claim to have a career as exciting and varied as the first incarnation of Wire, who release three albums in as many years before splitting. Moving through punk, post-punk, art-pop to almost avant-garde leanings, each album is unique but progressive: a cohesive journey stunning in its directness and thoughtful nature. That this compilation was originally released when Wire had reformed (for the first, but not last, time) seems grossly unfair: a reminder of a output no one could hope to top. But that's the future.
