A retrospective compilation from the New York-born Indian fusion musician Jai Uttal, SPIRIT ROOM is a rich tapestry of his output and his influences over the years. The collection ranges from his work with street musicians the Bauls of Bengal on "Be with You," (from BEGGARS AND SAINTS), to his collaboration with Bill Laswell on the post-Miles trumpet-laced "Guru Bramha" (from SHIVA STATION). There's no denying Uttal's sincerity in bringing Indian music to a Western audience (he's a Beatles fan who has previously recorded "Tomorrow Never Knows" on MONDO RAMA, not included here), which points to his upbringing as a child of the1960s. Perhaps the most interesting inclusion here comes from FOOTPRINTS, Uttal's first album and his collaboration with the late jazz trumpeter Don Cherry. Cherry's pocket trumpet sounds right at home amid the bubbling tables and Eastern cadences, and the success of FOOTPRINTS undoubtedly paved the way for Uttal's later fusion experiments.
