Despite being largely a fan of rock music, I do venture into the pop-rock section every now and then in hope of finding something to truly keep me listening. On previous ventures I have discovered Avril Lavigne and Katy Rose (unlikely to know her), but on the latest trip I discovered Michelle Branch. The difference between Avril, Katy and Michelle is that Ms Branch is a genuine singer-songwriter who can write the most beautiful ballad with just the swoosh of a pen.
A household name in the States, she is yet to break the (appalling) mainstream scene in the UK, despite having more natural talent than 90% of the turgid tripe that you see gracing the singles charts this side of the pond. She has also gone on to duet with Carlos Santana and Sheryl Crow, a couple of songs that elevated her status even higher than it already was and she is obviously a name in demand.

This, The Spirit Room, is Michelle’s first major label release, with Maverick Records snapping her up as soon as they’d heard a couple of tracks. Stand-out tracks would be the beautiful Everywhere and the truly emotional Goodbye To You (a song that was played at a local boys funeral last year). It is an album that is full of pop-rock mixed in with the some of the greatest ballads that you may ever hear, and for one so young to have such talent, it’s a guarantee that she’s going to go very far in the music business.
All You Wanted, Sweet Misery and You Get Me, are three more beautiful tracks that incorporate Michelle’s thoughtful lyrics with her trademark acoustic guitar sound to make results that would embarrass many legends of the business with the pure emotion to the lyrics and the truly graceful sound to every song. To pick a bad song would require me to be really picky because there isn’t a track worthy of being called bad on the album, however, if I had to pick the weakest track then it would be I’d Rather Be In Love, because it just has a differing vibe to it than all the other tracks.
I'ts an album with which you could just put your feet up, relax and float away in the beautiful melody as it soothes both your mind and soul (i'm not jokin either). It is better than any other debut album that I have ever heard, and that includes my favourite bands, and Michelle herself should get far more recognition than she currently does.
I’ll be honest and admit that I don’t know much of Michelle’s background, except that she has been longing to entertain from a very early age and that with her natural gift she should be doing so for a very long time. She is a true talent who has produced an album of pure quality that deserves more coverage in this country than it has, and with her follow up album Hotel Paper selling just as many, I urge you not to miss out on a true talent !
