This is the third album from the Irish singer/songwriter David Kitt, and sounds like that of a man who has fallen deeply in love. It was recorded over 2 years at Black Box Studios in the Loire Valley in France.
I love David Kitt. Like a lot of the rest of my music, it is thought-provoking and melancholy. This album is slightly more upbeat in comparison to his other albums; Small Moments and The Big Romance, and as always; has a very romantic feel to it. The warmth in his voice makes you fall deep into the song, and you can see that he has taken a lot of care in writing these songs.
I’m always on the look out for new music I haven’t heard of before. I first found David Kitt when a friend recommended and let me hear a song. This was You Know What I Want to Know from his album The Big Romance. I really enjoyed this song a lot and wanted to hear more, so I went out and bought both that album and Square 1. The lyrics are simple, but catchy and it could be said that some of the songs could be similar to Van Morrison, Rufus Wainwright, Nick Drake or David Gray
I won’t go into all of the songs, as I would just end up repeating myself and running out of things to say, however I will write about some of the ones that stand out for me.
1. I’m in love with a girl/the funniest girl in the world (1.00) This song is only one-minute long but provides and introduction and sets the scene of what is to come in the rest of the album; simple love songs. It can be seen where his inspiration comes from when writing songs, and his love-life has been the source of inspiration for this album in particular.
5. Black Box Waltz (1.03) An instrumental song on the album, which is really chilled out and relaxing. I love to hear instrumental pieces on albums; they give a break from the norm and this one is simple, relaxing and quite a short piece which is nice to hear in the middle of the album. It also blends nicely into the next song
6. Your Smiling Face (3.39) This is my favourite on the album. It is the first song that I listened to in full from this album (I have a tendency to skip through them to see what they are like before listening to the whole album). I think that is really stood out for me, and its warmth and lyrics took me in. This has quite a folky style about it, which is found in other of his songs. This song also has the help from David’s little brother Robbie Kitt.
8. Faster & Faster (4.35) This seems to have quite a traditional feel to it and one you can imagine being played in a backstreet Dublin bar. The chorus is one of those that you want to click your heels to and sing along; Kitts country influences can really be seen in this song.
I think that David Kitts main strength is his voice, which is so unique and catchy, however I do worry that some of the songs are quite ‘samey’, without much difference to them. But I think on another vein that this does help to listen to the album. I love to listen to music whilst doing other things particularly, and when I’m busy pottering around, this album is just great. There are songs that stand out, and others that just seem to blend in, a great mix.
I think we will be hearing much more about David Kitt in the future.
This album is really easy on the ear; it does have some songs which feel a bit country and folky, which is something found in many of Kitts songs, however these just make the romantic feeling of album. Although I think I preferred The Big Romance, his earlier album; this album still lives up to Kitt’s reputation. This is smooth, dreamy and relaxing and keeps you absorbed as you listen to each track - definitely a song to be bought for valentines day.
