Advantages: Imaginative story for a sequel, reappearance of favourite characters Disadvantages: needs more funny bits, plot weaknesses
everyone's surprise, including Cinderella and the Prince. There, then follows the attempts of Cinderella to get to the Prince and to break the spell.
I like the concept of time travel in stories but actually here it is more of a "What if?" question, where it is considered how subsequent events can turn out differently when a change happens in the original occurrences. It reminded me of the film "Sliding Doors" and the play "Intimate Exchanges" by Alan Ayckbourn in this respect. Do things really turn out differently? Is there a hand of fate, which makes things inevitable? Do things end up the same anyhow but by a different route? These questions and more are a bit too in-depth for a Disney film but at least ideas are thrown into the ring, which makes the film a bit different from the usual run-of-the-mill offerings.
The film also raised ...
Advantages: Great story, characters Disadvantages: None
THe best one yet is what the Jonathan Ross TV show calls it and I have to agree, Shrek the Third was definitely my favourite film of all three, hilarious from start to end and a great film for all the family.
Don't get me wrong, I like the other two as well. Shrek is just a great cartoon that I think works really well because both kids and adults can find the jokes funny and appreciate the humour. They seem to have the same formula as the Simpsons, which appeals to all ages as well very cleverly. I think Shrek has also been such a success because it uses the fairytale angle with a lot of its characters and this is something that everyone still wants to believe in, fairytales and make believe, good over evil and happily ever after.
If you're not familiar with Shrek he is a giant green ogre who lives in a land called Far Far Away. In ...
Advantages: High quality animation. Disadvantages: A dearth of story, directorial verve and originality.
All is not well in Far Far Away, Shrek's father-in-law croaks, leaving him the heir to the kingdom, but it's not a job the ogre wants. So he, Puss in Boots and Donkey set out to find Fiona's cousin Artie, who's next in line to the throne. But the young prince is reluctant. Prince Charming on the other hand would be only too happy to take the reins and he means to with the help of his newly recruited army of fairytale villains. While Shrek's away it's up to Fiona and the other fairytale princesses to protect Far Far Away from Charming and his forces. Can the ogres get the happy ending they deserve this time round?
The one thing you can say about the Shrek films is that the animation goes from strength to strength. Full credit to Dreamworks' animation studio; their attention to detail is superb. As usual, the characters look splendid ...
