of an untold part of its legacy seems far-fetched. But as the documentary film Standing in the Shadows of Motown demonstrates, there was more to the success of the Detroit-based label than singing babes in gowns and founder Berry Gordy's business acumen. There was also the self-named Funk Brothers: the session players putting the unforgettable guitar sounds into "You Keep Me Hangin' On" and the creeping bass line behind "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." These guys were a crucial piece of the puzzle but have remained largely anonymous. While the Standing documentary tells the Funk Brothers' story via interviews, stock footage, and still photos, the accompanying soundtrack takes liberties, pairing the surviving musicians with contemporary pop, R&B, and funk artists. Together, they faithfully recast Motown hits. What could have been a disaster--would you want to muck with "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"?--works beautifully, thanks both to the Brothers' chops and the thoughtful artist selection. While enlisting a soul brother like Ben Harper was a no-brainer, the inclusion of Joan Osborne was especially astute. After all, Osborne's deep connection to R&B is why her production of the Holmes Brothers' Speaking in Tongues disc was genius, and she acquits herself beautifully on "(Love Is Like A) Heat Wave" and "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted." Similarly, bass boss Meshell Ndegeocello gives Chaka Khan competition in the gospel diva department. Bootsy Collins, Gerald Levert, and Montell Jordan also contribute. Motown purists may balk at this concept, but they'd have to agree these readings are smart, respectful, and very, very soulful. --Kim Hughes

The CD is the record of the tribute concert performed by the surviving Funk Brothers, with celebrity vocalists. Recording quality of the live performance is excellent and provides a really great stereo soundstage. Standout tracks for me are Heatwave, sung by Joan Osborne, which gets the CD off to a great start, and showcases the superb rhythm section complemented by her smoky voice - which is very well recorded. I also like Shotgun, which is superbly sung by Gerald Levert, and features some great sax by Tom Scott and really percussive and funky drumming. My 2 real favourites, however are tracks 11 and 12. Track 11 is Cloud Nine - sung by Meschell Ndegeocello in a superbly individual and emotional style and featuring some great guitar effects. Track 12 is my all-time favourite track, as it is my favourite song, What's Going On, sung by my favourite singer, Chaka Khan. As with so many of her songs, she starts off almost sleepily, but builds to a great climax and introduces some jazz vocals backed by great rhythm provided by multiple drummers (I'm not that perceptive - I watched the DVD!) There are a couple of idiosyncratic tracks which are included - an instrumental version of Bernadette - presumably to highlight the bass of James Jamerson, and The Flick. Nevertheless, this is a superb package overall and I highly recommend it. This CD is readily available in stores or on-line, with a typical price of around £8 - but shop around! I got mine on-line at Tesco, but also try play.com, hmv and amazon.

Advantages: authentic, soulful, featuring stars Disadvantages: expensive, without key band members, rough
The title of the CD, in my opinion, fits perfectly. The FunkBrothers, I am convinced after listening to the tracks that they were the unsung heros. Just listen to way that the snare drum is tuned each song to fit the key. Just listen to the way the musicians can combine funk and soul into one complete package. Just listen to how close the tambourine is in your eears.
'StandingIn The Shadows Of Motown' is, in my opinion a great film and the soundtrack adds an even greater depth. Most of the great performers from the FunkBrothers are there and there are some very special guests indeed. Chaka Kahn & Montell Jordan provide an uplifting duet for the song Ain't No Mountain High Enough after Ben Harper provides a subtly smooth version of I Heard It Through The Grapevine.
However, as touched upon before, many of The FunkBrothers are ...
