This CD is the soundtrack of the film of the same name. The film tracks the history of the Funk Brothers - the musicians who provided the core of the Motown sound for so many years and contributed to many hundreds of hit records. The CD is the record of the tribute concert performed by the surviving Funk Brothers, with celebrity vocalists. Recording quality of the live performance is excellent and provides a really great stereo soundstage. Standout tracks for me are Heatwave, sung by Joan Osborne, which gets the CD off to a great start, and showcases the superb rhythm section complemented by her smoky voice - which is very well recorded. I also like Shotgun, which is superbly sung by Gerald Levert, and features some great sax by Tom Scott and really percussive and funky drumming. My 2 real favourites, however are tracks 11 and 12. Track 11 is Cloud Nine - sung by Meschell Ndegeocello in a superbly individual and emotional style and featuring some great guitar effects. Track 12 is my all-time favourite track, as it is my favourite song, What's Going On, sung by my favourite singer, Chaka Khan. As with so many of her songs, she starts off almost sleepily, but builds to a great climax and introduces some jazz vocals backed by great rhythm provided by multiple drummers (I'm not that perceptive - I watched the DVD!) There are a couple of idiosyncratic tracks which are included - an instrumental version of Bernadette - presumably to highlight the bass of James Jamerson, and The Flick. Nevertheless, this is a superb package overall and I highly recommend it. This CD is readily available in stores or on-line, with a typical price of around £8 - but shop around! I got mine on-line at Tesco, but also try play.com, hmv and amazon.
