“Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On” came in 1974 as the sixth album for Funkadelic. By this point the Psychedelic phase had long-gone for the George Clinton-led band and instead they had moved things on to the point where they advanced things with their progressive Funk to take on what the likes of Sly & The Family Stone and James Brown (and his associates) had come up with to create the sorts of things that would become extremely popular when, later on in the year the same band (who here contains many including Fuzzy Haskins, Eddie Hazel, Bernie Worrell and many others) as Parliament. It was also the first inclusion of Ron Bykosk on guitar (named as a polyester soul-powered token white devil) to add to the varied mix who included over 20 band members by this point.

1. “Red Hot Momma”

This, as quite a few of the early tracks from the band, a remake of an earlier tune that was recorded as The Parliaments, and here you find that after an intro that was originally taken from a track on the album prior to this one, you get them rocking things out with a groovy Funk joint to get the album off to a blazing start and liven the band up to a place that only they are capable of as they bring in more of the P-Funk mythology (which initially was found in their debut but doesn’t become as prominent until this year).

2. “Alice In My Fantasies”

With George Clinton as the lead vocalist, this one finds them performing another tune that takes on lots of Rock as they get down to it, and here they are seen to officially put down a tune that they were said to have improvised from as early as 1971 on stage, but took until this point to record it as the create a fly jam where they all just do what feels right and come up with a tune which has a lots of the sixties sounds injected into it.

3. “I’ll Stay”

They move things on with another old Parliaments tune here, but in this case they bring it up to modern times (1974) with a very current Funky Soul twist. It is a tune which takes into account all of the popular trends that were happening around them as many popular acts took from things that Funk acts pioneered, but it appears that as they try to do it, the results aren’t really that successful.

4. “Sexy Ways”

Here you get a rather straight-forward one here as you see that with Garry Shider on the lead vocals, he follows a girl and attempts to get her round to sleep with her. It is a danceable tune, and sees them pulling through the kinds of things that came through in the last two Funkadelic albums to come out with a composition which suits the themes of the jam and come up with the perfect overall joint for them.

5. “Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On”

They give up The Funk with this killer jam, and so after hearing a chipmunked rap from Fuzzy Haskins, you see that you get the band throwing down a jam which has them showing great progression in their music and how well they can construct songs. It is a killer joint and a tune that takes things straight towards the sorts of things that would eventually take over the Funk world in then-upcoming the years to follow. Of all songs up to this point, it sounds like the most advanced they had done, and amongst the best.

6. “Jimmy’s Got A Little Bit Of B***h In Him”

With what came of the tune prior to it, you find that there is a clear lift in spirits and it means that you can’t really complain about what they do as they are seen to try out even more experimental things with this one and as a result they come up with a very funny tune that directly mocks friend of the band. The way it is composed is just too much and takes things to another high for the band with a differing style.

7. “Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts”

The album ends with the band performing a tune which gets them taking things right back to the sorts of mystical places that was found on the 1970 debut release for Funkadelic and as a result you get a tune that takes on some of the Psychedelic elements and moulds them around their new-found musical progressions to take things to a place where you can feel the Soul (especially in Eddie Hazel’s solo guitaring) as they end on an epic joint.

Although the album does suffer with one weak track in it, the overall results completely over-shadow the single slip in the record as you see that they have got to a stage where they know what they are able to do (evident through the titular track) and what would become of the band after delivering that classic jam.
