The first CD in this fine collection of Stanford's choral works, this compilation delivers well. This collection focuses on the first period of his choral work, 'Cambridge Years'. Dominating the tracklisting are settings of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis. Particularly outstanding are those in B flat and F. You cannot fail to be moved by either the depth of bass in the Nunc Dimittis of the former, or by the triumphal crescendoes in the Magnificat ... ...bring words to life.
The other settings, in E flat and A, are no less majestic. However, it is perhaps hard to appreciate these as one should when they are found on the same disc as those aforementioned.
The rest of the CD provides a good contrast to the Evening settings. The anthems and motets provide for a more rounded view of Stanford's earlier work, and as such make this compilation more representative of the scope of choral music ... more

'The Lord is My Shepherd' is simply beautiful, and again, shows Stanford's ability to bring new life and meaning to such familiar words. This CD is the first in a collection and therefore should be seen in this light. In its attempt to show off Stanford's earlier works it more than achieves its goal. Such is the strength of this composer, that the CD also holds together as a single album as well, providing enough balance and contrast between similar and different types of choral work. The choir of Winchester Cathedral and their organists bring real quality to the musicianship. This CD would be a great purchase for any lover of English choral music. It is also a great listen for those who are more familiar with more modern composers, Parry, Britten etc. and wish to trace back the roots of this music. For Stanford 'fans' it is a must.
