Star Time - James Brown (Soul)

Additional notes

Album Notes: STAR TIME includes a 64-page booklet with three essays - brief appreciations by writer Nelson George and Brown's longtime tour manager Alan Leeds and a longer history by 2 of the box's producers - a complete discography and an introduction penned by the Godfather of Soul himself.
Personnel includes: James Brown (vocals, piano, organ); Bobby Byrd (vocals. organ); Phelps "Catfish" Collins (guitar); Maceo Parker (tenor & baritone saxophones); St. Clair Pickney, Pee Wee Ellis, Clifford "Ace King" MacMillian (tenor saxophone); Al "Brisco" Clark (baritone saxophone); Lewis Hamlin (trumpet); William "Bootsy" Collins, Bernard Odum (bass); John "Jabo" Starks, Nat Kendrick (drums).
Producers include: Ralph Bass, Syd Nathan, James Brown, Hal Neely, Afrika Bambaataa.
Compilation producer: Harry Weinger.
There are few box sets that can match the greatness of James Brown's STARTIME. Backed by such brilliant musicians as Melvin and Maceo Parker, Bootsy Collins and Bobby Byrd, Brown created some of the most intense, soulful music ever recorded. Collecting seventy two tracks that let you hear why Brown is hailed as "the hardest working man in show business," STARTIME is packed with the best R&B and funk that money can buy.
From early-'60s R&B hits like "Please, Please, Please" and late-'60s funk essentials like "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" and "Sex Machine" to the massively influential '70s funk grooves "Funky Drummer" and "The Payback," STARTIME gives you all the James Brown basics. This set is a monument to the life and music of one of the most colorful and inspired performers in popular music. STARTIME also comes with a 64-page booklet that features rare and wonderful photos and essays by Nelson George and several other noted critics. Essential.

Album Reviews: Rolling Stone (5/13/99, p.52) - Included in Rolling Stone's "Essential Recordings of the 90's."
Rolling Stone (5/30/91) - 5 Stars - Classic - "...a staggering collection....goes well beyond the usual hits 'n' rarities approach of boxed retrospectives to get at the essence of Brown's development from gospel-style shouter...to Soul Brother No. 1...and from God-father of Soul...to grandfather of rap..."
Rolling Stone (4/18/91) - "...The success of STAR TIME should pave the way for further examination of the James Brown catalog....the box is an ideal way to reintroduce Brown's massive body of work to a public more familiar with his legend than with the records themselves..."
Q (6/91) - 5 Stars - Indespensable - "...Brown is one of the half- dozen most important, most influential individual oeuvres of the entire rock-and-roll era: the equal of Dylan, The Beatles and Motown....This isn't just the history of one artist; it is literally the history of the groove, the beat that can't be beat..."
Entertainment Weekly (6/12) - "...soul history as a headlong rush of killer hooks, brain-melting horn blasts, and a scream that fuses passion and violence in one initiable call of the wild..." - Rating: A

The Birth Of Soul Caught Live
Review of Live At The Apollo (1962) [Remastered] - James Brown by  waynehorrigan

Advantages: James Brown before he went global
Disadvantages: Very dated, none of his big hits

...the best live album of all time, but for me parts of Rattle And Hum by U2 and Bob Marley's Live walk all over it. Read on for the tracks. THE TRACKS -------------------- 1. Introduction To James Brown A very glitzy, showbiz opening as the compare introduces James Brown (and The Famous Flames, his then backing group). After announcing each song the band will play and Brown will sing, a cymbal and one note trumpet ring sound, followed by the hysterical cheers of the mostly female audience. 2. I''ll Go Crazy Does some great vocal acrobatics before a mad rhythm and guitar part come in with the trumpets. The crowd, of course, approve. You can just see Brown toying with the brittle emotions of the teenage crowd as he goes through this mid-paced soul classic. 3. Try Me Aside from Please Please Please this is probably best known pre... Read review

THE GODFATHER OF SOUL
Review of Godfather, The (The Very Best Of...) - James Brown by  IanPhillips

Advantages: Contains his most well-known classics
Disadvantages: None!

...music that set standards for many of todays artists. The roaring Papas Got A Brand New Bag was a cross-Atlantic smash hit in 1965. Undertones of pure, pulsating funk wrapped up dynamically by James Browns explosive and rocketing vocal delivery made this instantly infectious track such a phenomenal classic. James Brown style always carried an earthy, urban R&B style that encapsulated traditional black soul with gospel undertones and a hint of Pop, hence why he enjoyed so much cross-ver success on the charts. Upbeat in its content was the astounding I Got You (I Feel Good) which was most certainly an ultimately feel-good song. It contained such an undeniably catchy hook to its melody. It's A Mans, Mans, Mans World is one of my all-time favourite James Brown classics. His angst-ridden delivery which impressively surfboards along... Read review

The Original Soul Sisters
Review of I'm A Good Woman Vol.1 (Funk Classics From Sassy Soul Sisters) - Various Artists by  waynehorrigan

Advantages: Soulful, genuine, funky, rare
Disadvantages: None

...of MTV-friendly rubbish. Quite brilliant Mark: 5/5 YKSMIWSS: "I know you could possess my body and make me scraaaaawl" **7. Jody Gayles: You Gotta Push** A chugging track very similar to James Brown's music. Another song with below average production and the track suffers slightly from that. The guitars nag as the bass comes in and out, but it's the beat and percussion that still the show as they're extremely inventive and impossibly funky. Mark: 3/5 YKSMIWSS: "I love you and every dog has it's day/But you've just got to meet me halfway" **8. Gladys Knight: Who Is She (And What Is She To You?) Possibly the most fanous soul star on here, is the old Motoen regular Gladys Knight, complete with her Pips. A great beat starts this off (I'm sure it's been sampled somewhere) and more porn keyboards and guitar come in. Gladys is on top... Read review
