Star Trek - the Motion Picture

Advantages: A Goldsmith classic, absolutely brilliant
Disadvantages: Main theme maybe too familiar

just won an Oscar in 1976 for The Omen. So everything seemed to be well and the film was expected to become a huge success. There was only one flaw: the story. Like the TV pilot for the original series in 1964 was originally labeled "too good for television," the story for the motion picture followed a more thoughtful pattern. There were many stretches in the film that had no dialogue in it for minutes on end, the story dragged very badly and most people found the film to be exceedingly dull. It was not until Nicholas Meyer took the helm in 1982 with Star Trek II: the Wrath of Khan that the francise picked up pace into the more action oriented adventure genre. When Jerry Goldsmith was taken on board to score the film, it was hoped that he would compose something in the heroic Star Wars vein (although one must admit that the film is far ...

Star Trek II OST

Advantages: Horner at his most inspired
Disadvantages: The album is too short

complex as Goldsmith's original, but it has so many wonderfully rich melodies that it is not eclipsed by that work. Horner has always had the penchant for creating instantly memorable and romantic themes and Star Trek II is no exception. 1. Main Title (3:03) 2. Surprise Attack (5:08) 3. Spock (1:13) 4. Kirk's Explosive Reply (4:02) 5. Khan's Pets (4:19) 6. Enterprise Clears Moorings (3:36) 7. Battle in the Mutara Nebula (8:05) 8. Genesis Countdown (6:36) 9. Star Trek III OST

Advantages: Great music by James Horner
Disadvantages: Some think a little too repeating of Star Trek II

and the only way for Kirk and crew to get there is to steal the Enterprise and go against Starfleet officials. To make things more complicated there is also a group of renegade Klingons wanting the Genesis secrets to themselves with Christopher Lloyd (of Back to the Future fame) as their leader Kruge. Although often declared as hokey and rather below-par when compared with some other Star Treks, The Search for Spock is quite decent entertainment and holds up quite well within the original crew features. Continuing with the story and overall production values is composer James Horner with his nautical approach on the Star Trek genre. Like the film, the score is a straight continuation on his previous score for Star Trek II and shares many details with it predecessor. The overall tone is the same but there are some sings of maturation both in ...
