State Of Independence - Jon Anderson

Advantages: Superb Music.

...life when I was lost, and I have to say that this song gave me hope, inspiration, and some kind of security. It's a lovely song. State of Independence was probably one of their most well known hits, and it really does pass the test of time. Upbeat, and optimistic, this song is the kind of song that makes you tap your feet and feel alive. One More time. This is probably one of the weak links on this album although even saying that, Jon Anderson makes you think about your life and the way that you perceive it to be. Play within a play is another song that is soft and melodious though not that memorable. Friends of Mr. Cairo. Now no one who is a Vangelis fan could fail to like this one. Advantages: good original material
Disadvantages: not the same without richies backup vocals

...Since the fantastic blaze of glory album which was indeed the soundtrack to young guns 2 we haven't seen much of Jon on his own. With the release of this album (Destination Anywhere)came various different film career attempts eg.destination anywhere,Midnight in Chelsea with Whoopi Goldberg and Kevin bacon and Moonlight in Valentino with er....Jon Bon Jovi, all of which seemed to fail miserably, but thankfully the album did not. It was released in the UK in 1997 from polydor records. The tracks were soft rock/pop with a few ballads thrown in for good measure, they seemed very moody and depressing at times. Most of the tracks were written by Jon Bon Jovi, and the lyrics were really heart-renching and meaningfull. Advantages: delicate, delightful melodies, pretty piano and strings
Disadvantages: rather samey and one dimensional

...Brett Anderson's second solo album is an intriguing affair. The ex-Suede singer has crafted a low key album from simple strings and piano, topped by his marvellously emotive voice. The nine songs are all relatively short so it's a good job that the album is a reasonable price. If you already like Brett's work then prepare to be impressed by Wilderness. But if you are a newcomer you may find the songs rather samey as the limited instrumentation offers little in the way of variety and the slow pacing of the tunes does little to change this. Both "Back To You" and "Clowns" will be familiar to fans from last year's singles, but both are new recordings. The new songs are uniformly good but there is little in the way of a highlight. The opening "Different Place" is probably the strongest tune here with only the "Funeral Mantra" breaking... Read review
