How many years is it since Steps split up? 3, 4, to be honest I’m not too sure now, so much has happened since then. But at the time steps were my life! (Yeah, yeah very sad I know!) But regardless of this Steps will always be one of my favourite bands!
I know Step One is a really old album, but I had it on today and it brought back loads of memories of my “Steps Days!” so I thought I’d have to write a review about it!
***Steps***
Steps were a chart-topping group of 5 pop stars, 2 boys, “H” and Lee, and 3 girls, Lisa, Faye and Claire. Steps were one of the most popular groups of the late 90’s. There music was classed as pop, although most people I know say it is cheesy pop! They were well known for they’re easy to pick up dance routines for each cong they released!
***Step One***
Step One was released in 1998; it was the first album to be released by Steps. This album introduces the band in a personal as well as musical way!
***How To Recognise This Album***
Step One is quite easy to recognise in the shops. The cover has a white background with the words “Steps, Step One” across the top and bottom, the words at the bottom are upside down and in blue and the words at the top are upright and a kind of pinky colour.
Across the middle of the cover are pictures of the band members from the shoulders
up, and then underneath those are another set of pictures of them upside down pulling silly faces.
***The Inside Cover***
The inside cover sleeve of this album can be removed and opens up into a small booklet which contains all the words to the songs and also some information on each of the band members – this is what I meant by the album introduces Steps personally as well as musically. Also at the back of this booklet are the bands thank you messages and general credits to all the people who have helped and supported the group as they made the album.
***The Songs***
There are 12 songs on the Step One album, they are as follows…
1. Steptro. This is a short introduction to the album. It is like the sound of a heartbeat, it starts off quiet and gradually builds up to full volume and leads you straight into the 2nd song.
2. Last Thing On My Mind. This is a copy of the old Bananarama song. It was the second song to be released as a single off this album. This is a lively song with a dance routine that is reasonably easy to pick up.
3. 5,6,7,8. This was the first song to be released by Steps. It was released before the album and was supposed to be the only song Steps did, but due to its success… it wasn’t! This song is lively and bubbly and was very popular among the line dancing community; this was probably due to the dance routine being a kind of line dance!
4. One For Sorrow. This was the third song to be released from Step One. This was another popular one, which was well known for it’s dance routine. This song starts off slow, but quickly builds up to a much livelier bouncy song!
5. Heartbeat. This isn’t a personal favourite of mine. This was the 5th song to be released off the album; it was released with Tragedy as a double A-side single. Tragedy doesn’t appear on this album, it is on the second Steps album – Steptacular. Heartbeat is slower than the first few songs, however it still manages to be upbeat as well!
6. This Heart Will Love Again. This song was not released as a single. Again his song is slower than others, but it still remains quite upbeat and cheesy!
7. Experienced. Again this is another song that wasn’t released as a single, and I can see why! This has to be the worst song on the album! It is slow, boring and never seems to end!
8. Too Weak To Resist. I think I can resist this one! It is like an extension of track 7! Another slow and boring song.
9. Better Best Forgotten. Yay! Back to bouncy and lively with a cool dance routine! This was the fourth song to be released and it’s fantastic! Strangely enough I often forget about this song – appropriate to the title! But it makes it sound even better when I haven’t heard it for ages!
10. Back To You. This song wasn’t released as a single. I have mixed feelings on this song, I sort of like it, but then I don’t! It is lively but then at the same time kind of slow! I wouldn’t say it was a bad song; I just have to be in the right type of mood to listen to it!
11. Love You More. This was not released as a single. It is a happy “nice” song. Not many people I know who are/were Steps fans actually liked this song, but I think it’s quite lively and generally just a “nice” song.
12. Stay With Me. Another song which wasn’t released as a single, this song is a slow song to end the album, which in a way I think is a shame as Steps were known for being lively and upbeat, so I think they should have ended on a nice happy bubby number that’ll get you bouncing around. But anyway… back to the song! This isn’t a bad song; it’s just a bit slow for my liking!
***Should You Buy This Album?***
YES! But I would say that, as I was a mad Steps fan!
Seriously though this album has got it all. It is a good mixture of lively and bouncy songs to get the party going and people up dancing, and then it has some nice slower ones to wind down to. It also has a few that fall into both categories!
With the exception of tracks 7 and 8, I would say this album is fantastic and has something on there that most people will like, and everyone should have a copy… come on Steps are fab!! (Even now!)
***Is This Music Suitable For Children?***
A big YES! Steps were very popular especially with young children. Their songs and dance routines are simple and easy for children to pick up. There is no bad language at all in any of their lyrics, in fact Steps were known for their “squeaky clean image!”
***How much Will It Cost Me?***
The answer to this depends on where about you buy your music. Some of the main music retailers still sell this album at the original price of anything between £10.99 and £13.99. However I have seen it in smaller music retailers and other stores that don’t sell music as their main line, for anything from £5 up.
Ok, I’ve told you all I can about this album now, so if you do buy it then I wish you many hours of HAPPY DANCING!!
