If someone said to you “define Death Metal”, what would you say? I expect it would be something like “heavy vicious guitars, mad drumming with plenty of blast beats and a vocalist who roars into a microphone”. Opeth are definitely classed as a Death Metal band, but a different kind at that. ... Read review

Death Metal with a twist

AdvantagesDifferent from typical Death Metal, and very original. Even though the songs are very long, there is not one dull moment on the album.

Disadvantages There aren't any.

"If someone said to you “define Death Metal”, what would you say? I expect it would be something like “heavy vicious guitars, mad drumming with plenty of blast beats and a vocalist who roars into a microphone”. Opeth are definitely classed as a Death Metal band, but a different kind at that. I like the phrase “Death Metal with a twist”. Opeth are not a run of the mill Death Metal band, as you will find out if you listen to them. They combine beautiful ..." Read review

Serenity Painted Death

Advantagesbrilliant songwriting, great production, great riffs, great vocals,

Disadvantagesatmospheric, original

"With 'Still Life' Swedish progressive extreme metal band Opeth continue in the vein of their previous album 'My Arms Your Hearse', mixing beautiful, folky spanish guitar passages with alternately urgent and lamenting death-metal influenced sections and bluesy leads and solos. Album opener 'The Moor' starts with a hypnotic little clean guitar part that goes on, no doubt intentionally, for a little to long before bursting into the song proper, with ..." Read review

Brilliant album

AdvantagesThe kick-ass metal riffs, the acoustic sections and how they link with the heavy sections, the vocals

DisadvantagesA lot of riffs are the same tempo, some songs get a bit boring after a while

"This is the first Opeth album I bought and the only one I have so far, but this is a great release, and I definately want to buy more by them. Opeth are something new. They mix death metal with 'cookie monster' vocals with acoustic guitars, clean vocals and a bit of prog. The opening track, The Moor has a weird intro that goes on for nearly 2 minutes, and the novelty wears off by the second listen. The acoustic intro is great, then when the ..." Read review

Life is never Still with these guys!

AdvantagesEverything, from perfection and beyond

DisadvantagesDoesn't go on forever

"1) The Moor 2) Godheads Lament 3) Benighted 4) Moonlapse Vertigo 5) Face Of Melinda 6) Serenity Painted Death 7) White Cluster Bands today often seem to have at least one of many flaws, either they are jumping on the bandwagon of what will sell in todays market, they lack imagination, or are simply not unique. Opeth however, can boast all of these qualities, profound imagination, uniqueness of the highest caliber and unrivaled originality. ..." Read review

Face of Perfection...Opeth's best album?

AdvantagesExpansive, beautifully crafted, musically moving

DisadvantagesOnce hooked, it's difficult to give Opeth up...

"Brutal and agressive, with beautiful melody and atmosphere. Indescribable except as an exceptional metal album, spanning genres from black metal to classical and folk. The Progressive elements which have since become more prevelent in Opeth's albums really came to the fore in this release from 1999. There also feature nuances of a far "jazzier" Opeth than seen previously (or subsequently, though I await my first listening of "Watershed" the album ..." Read review

Additional notes

Album Notes The first Acid Daze compilation covered Hawkwind's later years, attempting to collect key cuts and rarities from an often-diffuse era. Volume two concentrates on what many consider Hawkwind's classic age, the period between 1972-1975, an era when the band released its most influential music and its lineup contained key members Nik Turner, Bob Calvert, Del Dettmar, and most famously, Lemmy. In keeping with the pattern of volume one, the album eschews hits for rarities and album cuts. "Silver Machine" and "Kings of Speed," two of the biggest hits Hawkwind had during this time, are absent. Instead, the compilation includes "Kings"' B-side, "Motorhead," which Lemmy later put to good use fronting his own band, as well as a live version of "You Shouldn't Do That" (here called "Watchfield Festival") and "Magnu," a superb album track from Warrior on the Edge of Time. Unfortunately, as is the case with the first Acid Daze set, the versions here are mostly live versions rather than the original studio recordings, which means that this is not exactly the best way to hear some of these cuts. What's more, by using live versions from shows recorded later, the compilation manages to squeeze in ringers like "Angels of Death" (from 1981) and "Hash Cake '77." Still, there are many rare tracks from this era, which gives Acid Daze, Vol. 2 a slight edge over its predecessor. ~ Victor W. Valdivia
