Album Notes: STILL ON TOP: THE GREATEST HITS is a career-spanning anthology of hits by mercurial Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison. Starting with two key tracks by his Rolling Stones-like 1960s band, Them--"Gloria" and "Here Comes the Night"--the set passes over Morrison's legendary 1968 album, ASTRAL WEEKS, a jazzy mood piece that works best as a whole, but otherwise cherry-picks a ton of FM radio classics. "Wild Nights," "Domino," "Moondance," and "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You" are among the many highlights, presented in remastered sound.
Album Reviews: Dirty Linen (p.82) - "Tracing the Celtic soul rocker from his beginnings as top dog among the Jagger/Davies shouters of the time with the seminal group Them to his place as top headman to bong smokers and onto becoming the best blue-eyed soul singer to ever come out of Ireland is quite a journey in and of itself."

Advantages: Disadvantages:
...This album reminds you just how incredibly good VanMorrison is. From the initial cheerful melodies of “Bright Side Of The Road” to the closing moments of the final track, “Dweller On The Threshold,” I was completely hooked. Classic hits such as “Moondance,” “Brown Eyed Girl” and the ultimate love song “Have I Told You Lately” are all on here, along with songs you may not be so familiar with. However, it is these songs which give you the nicest surprise, for they are all instant classics themselves, with “Did Ye Get Healed” and “Queen Of The Slipstream” as standout tunes. You don’t need to be a VanMorrison fan to love this album....

Advantages: Van Morrison at his peak Disadvantages: none
...Van Morrisson's 3rd solo album showing a complete change of direction from the pastorial Astral Weeks with the romaticism welded to a hard soul edge and jazzy interludes.
Everyone should know the title track but all tracks are equally good with "crazy love" and "into the mystic" my personnel favourites all of which are equally suitable for dancing or listening to.
Everyone should own at least one VanMorrison album and barring greatesthits compilations this would be the best starting point - the songs are well written, voice and arrangements are both hard but pure...

...Astral Weeks was described by one reviewer as one of the top ten rock albums of all time. He then wrote that this was better. It was and still is a fair comment.
Moondance's songs are more defined and less related than the albums predessor, "Astral Weeks". Unfortunately the title track has been hijacked by every MOR singer who thinks that they can sing Jazz.
Still all the songs are perfect, from the opening "And it Stoned Me" to "Glad Tidings" at the close. If you listen to the album a few times the somgs will stay with you forever.
Another perfect gem from Van the Man....
