First it was UNFORGETTABLE WITH LOVE, by Natalie Cole in 1991, an album which highlights the songs of her father and catapulted this popular jazz artist to success. And now we have STILL UNFORGETTABLE-another compendium that is definitely fabulous! Fabulous is one word I can muster for this work of art by Natalie Cole. Who doesn't know Natalie after she recorded the song UNFORGETTABLE which, she admits, altered the course of her career way back in 1991. Nat "King" Cole was her father, the crowned king of balladeers in the music's kingdom hall of fame where the likes of Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday, and Tony Bennett also ruled time after time. She is a living legend in music, having won two Grammy Awards for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album and many more-nine Grammies in all. On February this year, she won a National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Award for Outstanding Jazz Artist for this album presented in the famous Shrine Auditorium in California.
The influence of her father still suspires with her music now, and it was the recording of the song Unforgettable that sent her delving for the best pieces in the Great American Songbook, choosing the best and memorable music not only from her father but also from other great legends such as Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis, among others. After the phenomenal success of the 1991 album, she waited for the proper timing to come up with another reinvention of old standards, thus emerged STILL UNFORGETTABLE, child born of her marriage with undying music of the great kings of American ballads. The songs are not mere renditions. They are re-creations of the genre lived by his father which only a daughter can give a new life.
Songs in this album are: 1) Walkin’'My Baby Back Home 2) Come Rain or Come Shine 3) Coffee Time 4) Somewhere Along the Way 5) You Go to My Head 6) Nice 'N Easy 7) Why Don't You Do Right? 8) Here's That Rainy Day 9) But Beautiful 10) Lollipops and Roses 11) The Best is Yet to Come 12) Something's Gotta Give 13) Until the Real Thing Comes Along 14) It's All Right with Me
You will never go wrong if you try listening to this album, especially for those who are quite acquainted with the music of the 40's and the 50's. For sure this is not for old-timers, the way Natalie Cole gave a ballad a new character in its own right. Remember that she is a versatile artist who has been rated an excellent Pop, R & B and jazz singer combined.
Since she is also the producer of this album, I don't think she has not weighed in the risk she took and the timing she chose in coming up with it. This will be real grosser again.
