Most of the jokes we trade are actually hundreds of years old: Palamedes, a Greek hero of ... more
the Trojan War, is credited with inventing the joke and it was Philip the Great of Macedon in the 4th century BC who paid to have the first joke book compiled. Why do we laugh at these jokes? This title explores the various theories.
Advantages: Transformations from bad songs into good songs! Disadvantages: All covers, some good, some bad
For those of you that don't know, The Wildhearts made a fantastic comeback in 2007 with their self-titled album, The Wildhearts, which was probably the best album they have produced in their (approximately) twenty year career. The album had a great fresh new sound and was made up of several classic tracks.
They have followed this up with Stop Us IfYou'veHeardThisOneBefore Vol. 1. This indicates that there could be a Vol. 2 in the future! The album is made up of fifteen cover songs from the band's favourite artists and was released on 19th May 2008. While the album contains no original songs by the band themselves, they have taken some pretty bad songs and turned them into rock classics quite impressively.
The two tracks that stand out the most for me are the amazing transformation of Warren Zevon's Carmelita, which sounds much ...
Advantages: Diverse, Different, Cannily Arranged. Disadvantages: The Mixture of Genres might be too much for some!
("The Only One I Know").
This album stands on it's own two feet purely down to the sense of curiosity you have when you read the tracklist. Although, the recent release of the old Smith's classic "StopMe" featuring Daniel Merriweather (new upcoming Aussie singer) adds a little to the intrigue too. The track also reiterates the fact that Ronson has experimented with a number of different genres and styles in the making of this album. "StopMe" for example, has a reggae connotation to it, and Daniel Merriweather's vocals could be slightly reminiscent of UB40's frontman Ali Campbell!
"Valerie" originally by The Zutons, has been sensationally remastered to feature the sultriness of Amy Winehouse. Her voice, although instantly recognisable, fits the genre snugly, and almost suits her better having a slight indie edge to it.
"Oh My God ...
Advantages: Good songs to sing along to Disadvantages: More slow songs than upbeat ones
Now I know everyone will think I am a complete Embrace nut, seeing as though my first two ops are based on them, and you would be right! I love this band and could be seen as biased, but I am honest and tell the truth!!
IfYou?ve Never Been is their third and most recent album, only being released three weeks ago. Well I bought it the day after it came out and must admit that it is in my stereo at home and in my car radio and I have been playing it constantly since I bought it!!
Here is the track listing and a little bit about each :-
Over
A nice mellow song and makes a good intro to the album. The melodic guitar riff in the background is one that will stick in your head and makes this song a good one to chill out to.
I Hope Your Happy Now
Another mellow one to break you in gently. This is a really nice song and is ...
