Scotsman, Rod Stewart has had more than enough top-drawer hits to fill this double album,The Story So Far. There is no chronological order, which is probably a good thing as his golden period in the 1970s would undoubtedly cast a shadow over his subsequent work, which although good is no match for "Maggie May", "You Wear it Well" or the swaggering blues rocker "Hot Legs". The album is split into two distinct sections, "A Night Out" which as you may guess is the up-tempo numbers like "This Old Heart" and "Ooh La La" whereas "A Night In" shows the more tender side of balladeer Rod beginning with the "love it or hate it" anthem "Sailing" and then onto classics like "I Don't Want To Talk About It", "The Killing of Georgie" and "Have I Told You Lately". Rod Stewart has been the subject of many compilations beforeThe Story So Farbut with many of them being either single discs with glaring omissions or box sets with just a few too many album fillers, this is the most definitive yet succinct greatest hits yet. --David Trueman

This is the only Rod Stewart cd that i own. All of his best songs are here. I particularly wanted the track = Rhythm of my heart, as its been a favourite of mine for a long time. Having listened to both cd,s i find myself liking everything about it. I bought it used from ebay and at a very reasonable price, especially for a double cd. As he now seems to be singing the old crooner type of songs i don,t expect to be buying any more, definately not my thing, even though i love his voice, i really dont like the " sinatra " stuff. The days of " Maggie May " when he was a bit of a rocker, is much more my thing. he says = Do you think i,m sexy. well in my opinion yes, yes , yes. like a lot of singers he gets better with age. If you are looking for a good rounded selection of Rod,s best song,s , then you need look no further.

Best of both worlds? Review ofStory So Far, The (The Very Best Of Rod Stewart) - Rod Stewartby

Advantages: Spans most of his popular songs before becoming a "soothie" Disadvantages: none really
Must admit, liked a lot of Rods stuff ever since Maggie May, but never actually bought many as the hit records came along, and must again admit, went off him in later years when he started covering Sinatra style stuff (crooning, I believe?), but when this came along, it wasnt just a case of buying a "Greatest Hits", more like a compilation of the best of his upbeat records and slower stuff like "sailing", hence both discs being named "A night out" ... ...like that, and it more than describes accurately summing each disc, as they are well graded to the mood you are in as to which you would probably play. Tracks speak for themselves, all enjoyable to either dance, feel happy listening to, or just kicking back and relaxing, and not badly priced for a double disc with so many track, can heartily recommend even if youre not a big fan, nostalgia is off the scale ...
