It's nearly 20 years since the world's most dangerous group committed the ghetto dictionary to wax, and the intervening years have yet to blunt the hardcore edge of Compton's most gritty.

Armed and dangerous, with an outrageous arsenal of braggadocio, misogyny and murderous intent, NWA blasted a gang-banging path across popular culture, kicking down the door for a slew of hardcore disciples, and laying bare the frustration and anger simmering in Los Angeles' crime-infested ghettoes.

Dr Dre, Ice Cube, Easy E, MC Ren and DJ Yella had the FBI on their tail, and the parental advisory groups flustered, but the controversy sparked a platinum-encrusted ride into infamy, fortune and excess - all without the benefit of radio airplay .

This compilation takes in the best of Dr Dre's outstanding work in the studio and Ice Cube's affinity for wordplay. Songs like Straight Outta Compton, Appetite for Destruction and F**k tha Police bristle with inner-city menace, while the playful Express Yourself reels in listeners with a more sensitive palate with its feel-good James Brown sample.

A latter collaboration, with Snoop Doggy Dogg filling in for the late Easy-E, keeps you up-to-date with Dr Dre's production evolution and returns family movie favourite Ice Cube to his menacing mostest.

Warning though: this album played a major role in issuing the parental advisory stickers. These boys play for keeps.
