Studio One Rub-A-Dub - Various Artists

...). There are only really a handful of dub reggae artists from the 70’s, but between them they have produced a lot of material. The 21 tracks here, recorded at Randy’s, Black Ark, Harry J’s, Channel One and King Tubby’s studios are simply a taster of the total. Sadly Augustus Pablo (Horace Swaby) died in 1999 at only 46 from the nerve disorder ‘Myasthenia Gravis’ but left a whole discography behind for us to enjoy. The album features a whole host of bass players and drummers. On lead guitar is Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith and on rhythm guitar are Fazal Predergrass, Tommy McCook, Marquis, Bobby Ellis and Vincent Gordon. The saxophone is played by Richard ‘Dirty Harry’ Hall and Everton DaSilva is on percussions. For a good comparison check out King Tubby, Lee Perry or Scientist. ...'Genie in a Bottle' (3:39) is widely considered to be the debut single by female solo-artist Christina Aguilera, despite having released two relatively unknown tracks prior to this. Released in 1999, at the time Christina (who would later go on to receive her own set of nicknames, including Xtina) was just 19 years of age and would become the second young female to become a huge charting success in the closing of the 90's. Of course the other would be none other than Britney Spears, who had debuted earlier in the year, and with their similar performance and style this would lead to comparisons between the two later errupting into what was apparently a fully blown feud between the two that had previously worked together on Disney television as young stars in their own right, including working with Justin Timberlake. ...The Viva Diablo Blanco compilation is a carefully selection of hyms of drum'n'bass / ambient tunes from the mid 90's. You'll be sure to rebember tracks such as Apollo 440's "Ain't Talking about dub" and Fat Boy Slim's "Song for Linda" and at the same time recall some less mainstream artists such as The Aloof and The Art of Noise and on top some very good remixes by the likes of the brazillian collective Filla Brazilia and others. All in all this album does really capture the essence of the whole snowboarding sub-culture, so the snowboarder on the album's cover isn't just a fluke. In a few words this compilation is bold, young and fast paced, but still a ambient album that you can play over and over.... Read review
