Bringing together the original cuts of classic tracks such as "Skylarking" and Dawn Penn's ... more
instantly recognisable "No, No, No", Studio One Rockers showcases not only the talents of influential artists that were to become synonymous with reggae but also the styles, sounds and above all rhythms that were to dominate Kingston studios into the 1970s and beyond. There are a number of rocksteady classics (hence the name), with tracks like hammond organ maestro Jackie Mittoo's "Hot Milk" and the legendary Marcia Griffiths' "Feel Like Jumping" highlighting the then dramatic change in style away from the faster beats of Ska towards heavy, bass-led tracks with a much slower tempo. But Studio One Rockers is not restricted to this. The semi-instrumental track "Phoenix City" pounds along at a breakneck pace with trumpets belting and, along with "Greedy G", shows the importance a faster beat, a funky take or a "big band" sound also had within the Studio One fold. There are tracks from DJs like Lone Ranger with his "Badder Dan Dem" vocal rhythms and dancehall sounds. Roots artists include one of its biggest stars, Horace Andy, whose then unique falsetto was later emulated by many looking for a similar pop success. Then a pre-teen, reggae star Freddy McGregor also appears on "Bobby Babylon". Freddy, like many of the artists here, was to produce some of his best work under the watchful eye of Studio One's equally famous producer Clement "Coxsone" Dodd. In many ways a tribute to Coxsone's production skills and rhythms that continue to be rediscovered and recut, Studio One Rockers is essential listening for anyone with even a passing interest in Jamaican music. --Caroline Butler

Hot on the heels of Studio One Rockers comes Studio One Soul, another sensational ... more
compilation that this time spotlights the inescapable link between Jamaican reggae and US Soul. Since the late 1950s, which saw ska born out of American R&B, the Jamaican reggae fraternity has always had a strong affiliation towards US soul, and later on, funk. For instance, the late great Curtis Mayfield was a pivotal influence on a young Bob Marley. The profound impact of US soul on Studio One is perhaps best illustrated by the oodles of cover versions of well-known soul sides, many of them radically re-worked and re-interpreted, recorded at the studio. The musicianship dazzles throughout, the Studio One ensemble effortlessly matching Motown's Funk Brothers, Stax's Booker T & The MGs and Spector's Wrecking Crew. Indeed, such is the sheer jaw-dropping brilliance on display, that it's difficult to highlight favourites. But if pressed, Norma Fraser's reading of PP Arnold's "First Cut Is The Deepest" and Jerry Jones version of The Four Tops "Still Water (Love)" are worth the price of admission alone. In tribute to Hitsville USA, Studio One record sleeves proclaimed the legend "The sound of young Jamaica". Certainly, on the evidence provided here, Studio One, like Motown, boasts a back catalogue of truly timeless treasures. --Chris King

You might have seen this CD before and been miffed at the measly 17 tracks on offer, especially compared to the 50 track box sets that Trojan offer for less money, and so left it on the shelf. However, this CD is simply the best ska compilation I've ever seen, so go back to the shop and buy it! I'll tell you why you should:
This compilation contains original ska recorded at Brentford Road in the early sixties by the then-superstars of Jamaica, and the quality of the selection is awe-inspiring! As the house band, The Skatalites pretty much play on all of these tracks, with the artists forming a who's who of Jamaican music - Tommy McCook, Don Drummond, Jackie Mittoo and Roland Alphonso play in various arrangements alongside The Maytals, The Ethiopians, Delroy Wilson, Joe Higgs and The Wailers.
The scorching ska instrumentals - Exodus, Addis Ababa, The President, Beardsman Ska, Sampson, Freedom Sounds, Look Away Ska, El Bang Bang, Scamnelena and Cosmic, are some of the classiest, top drawer tunes you will find, with driving, pulsating rhythms and beautiful melodies, matched only by Prince Buster's All Stars (who were basically The Skatalites under a different name anyway!). These guys were the business.
The vocal tracks are even better though - "Marching On" by The Maytals and "I Want Justice" by Delroy Wilson are storming up-tempo belters, "I'm Gonna Take Over Now" by The Ethiopians is my favourite and a lovely downtempo melodic number, plus there's the weird-but-amazing "I'm the Song My Enemies Sing" by Joe Higgs. Tagged onto the end is "Your Wondering Now" as famously covered by The Specials on their debut LP (and more recently Amy Winehouse), which is simply a classic and ends the set well.
