Advantages: Very entertaining, clearly explained, interesting Disadvantages: Simplifies happiness, definition of happiness is disputable
extent, I don?t think it does it justice. I have no doubt that Lori and Reba are happy, but the science used to demonstrate this simply isn?t sufficient ? but then, I doubt that science can ever be sufficient to describe and measure happiness. Stumbling On Happiness fails to live up to its promise in several areas; it attempts to explain happiness and yet some of the theories and case studies used to demonstrate this seem horribly irrelevant and trivial.
As Gilbert says in closing, ?There is no simple formula for finding happiness. But if our great brains do not allow us to go surefootedly into our futures, they at least allow us to understand what makes us stumble?. Happiness cannot (at present) be fully explained by science, but Gilbert does a reasonably good job in Stumbling On Happiness. What it can explain, it explains clearly ...
Advantages: Interesting, very personal, practical and academic Disadvantages: -
There is a problem with the term ?feminism? ? it has acquired the status of many political terms that often inspires a knee-jerk reaction of one sort or another, positive or negative. This is unfortunate, given the depth and breadth of insight given to modern scholarship, politics, sociology and cultural awareness through those efforts and developments that might all well be classified under the term ?feminism?.
So, whether your reaction is immediately positive or negative, I would invite you to set your preconceptions aside for a moment at consider 'Feminist Theory and Christian Theology: Cartographies of Grace' by Serene Jones. Serene Jones is an associate professor of theology at Yale Divinity School; her father Joe Jones was professor of theology at my seminary (look for a review of his book 'The Grammar of Christian Faith' soon ...
Advantages: Fun acting, excellent timing, beautiful setting, lots of laughs Disadvantages: No smell-o-vision!!!!! Too smooth an ending.
-wrote the screenplay for this film (with the story originator, Mark Crowdy) and also plays the part of Matthew, Grace's inept, but charmingly handsome Scottish gardener, who has been unsuccessfully growing pot in the garden of the Vicarage, of all places. His request for her able assistance in helping him revive his dying seedlings is what plants the seed for her scheme to instant solvency. I'm sure you can all guess what that is.
Woven into this plot is Matthew's relationship with Nicky, aptly played by relatively unknown Valerie Edmond, who pulls off another strong/weak woman part. In addition, the local doctor, played by Martin Clunes is an excellent comic relief (probably best known in the US for his performance as Gary Strang in " Men Behaving Badly", and most recently in the part of William in 'William and Mary'. I understand he ...

Album Notes
Personnel includes: Emmylou Harris (vocals, guitar, 6-string bass guitar); Kate McGarrigle (acoustic guitar, accordion, background vocals); Tony Hall (acoustic guitar, bass); Malcolm Burn (electric guitar, harmonica, whistles, piano, Fender Rhodes, piano, bass, percussion); Ethan Johns, Buddy Miller (electric guitar); Daniel Lanois (pedal steel guitar, background vocals); Brady Blade (drums, percussion, background vocals); Daryl Johnson (percussion, background vocals); Julie Miller, Linda Ronstadt, Jane Siberry, Anna McGarrigle, Gillian Welch, Jill Cunniff (background vocals). Recorded at Le Maison Bleu Studio, Kingston, New York; Masterlink Studio, Sound Emporium and Ocean Way Studio, Nashville, Tennessee between February and June 2003. Over three decades into a highly successful career as an interpreter of other writers' material, Emmylou Harris beats the odds by releasing her second consecutive album of original compositions. She's had plenty of time to learn from the best, and the lessons gained from digging into the work of writers like Gram Parsons, Leonard Cohen, and Townes Van Zandt can be felt here, even if she can't be expected to equal their mastery. She works again with members of the Spyboy band that helped reinvent Harris's sound on WRECKING BALL, but as on RED DIRT GIRL, the churning, rhythmic feel of the former is underplayed in favor of a gentler, more folkish approach. Years ago, few could have guessed that one of Harris's most valuable songwriting partners would be a former member of NYC funk-rockers Luscious Jackson, but Jill Cunniff is a worthy weapon in STUMBLE INTO GRACE's arsenal, co-writing the trenchant "Time in Babylon." Other esteemed writing partners include Daniel Lanois, ex-husband Paul Kennerly, and Kate & Anna McGarrigle, but this ultimately feels like a very personal statement straight from the heart of this seasoned artist.
Album Reviews
Entertainment Weekly (9/26/03, p.94) - "...The results are lovely, heartbreaking, and just diffident enough to get perspective on this bittersweet old world." - Rating: A Q Magazine (10/03, p.104) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...[Harris] settle easily into her stride....The dark, gritty 'Time In Babylon', in particular, shows just how far Harris has pushed the traditional country sound..."
