Sublime's self-titled third album, released in 1996, was the album set to make the band's mark on the world. However, just a few months before its release, Bradley Nowell (lead vocalist and guitarist with the band) died from a heroin overdose. This can only be seen as a major blow to the world of music.
The album itself is outstanding. It combines the genres of ska, reggae, punk, rap, dub and rock, to make something totally individual. The instrumentation throughout is also a mix of these genres, with typical guitar, bass and drums, coupled with a Hammond B-3 organ and various acoustic guitars. As a whole, it seems a rather uplifting album unitl you listen carefully to some of the subjects of the songs. For example, 'Garden Grove' is about taking heroin, whilst 'April 29, 1992 (Miami)' is about looting in the LA riots.
There are several individual songs that deserve specific mention. Firstly, 'Get ready' should be noted for it's very chilled reggae feel, coupled with ska undertones in the guitar part. Next there is 'Doin Time' which cleverly uses the musical ideas from Gershwin's 'Summertime' to create a chilled rap/reggae song. 'Pawn Shop' is a quiet song with a catchy bass and guitar line, once again with added ska themes throughout. This starts as quite an instrumental piece, adding lyrics after over a minute of the track. It is also very misleading due to the break in the middle which makes you think the track has finished when it hasn't at all.
My favourite Sublime track ever has to be track 6 on this album, 'Santeria'. It's probably one of the best known Sublime songs, filled with an irresistible introduction, leading into yet another ska/dub style song. The chorus is amazingly catchy, and should appeal to most people's taste in music. The guitar solo should also be listened to carefully as it enables you to drift onto a desert island with a fantastic beach and coconut palm trees all round.
Other songs worth a brief mention include 'Wrong Way', 'Carress me Down', 'Seed' and 'What I got'. 'Wrong Way' and 'Seed' are two of the more punky tracks on the album, adding to the fact that this is such a widely based album.
With a monster 17 tracks, it's definitely worth buying this if you fancy something quite summery and light-hearted.

An excellent review - you talked about the album at length without going into information overload - great stuff!
