The Sugbabes are a British girl band consisting of three members Keisha Buchanan, Heidi Range and Amelle Berrabah (although Keisha is the only original member). The 'babes have been active in the music industry since 1998. To date the band have sold over five million albums worldwide.
I have never been a fan of the actual band , although I have liked a few of their songs and own a couple of their albums. Only recently I have had a change of view and have become quite a big fan of the girls , so when I heard that they had a new album out , off I went to buy it.
Catfights and Spotlights is the sixth album from the Sugababes. It was released in the United Kingdom on October 20th 2008. There are fifteen tracks on the album including three bonuses. The length of the album is forty nine minutes and ten seconds.
* Girls * Girls is the debut single off the album and is a cover of a the song 'girls' by Ernie K Doe. This song is full of girl power and makes you feel proud to be feminine. This song is incredibly catchy with memorable lyrics of "Here come the girls …girls , girls …". It's a song that stays in your head for ages after hearing it. With this song , you either love it or hate it!
I love it!
* You On A Good Day * I think the bit at the beginning "Are you ready…Keisha ? Heidi ? Amelle ?" was a bit like Destiny Child's Independent Women. This isn't my favourite song on the album ; it's quite boring and I feel it doesn't reach it's peak.
* No Can Do * This is a totally new style for the Sugababes. It reminds me more of a Girls Aloud song. The chorus is a bit like the chorus in the Jackson 5 song (I don't know the name of the song , but it's the one that Bianca from Eastenders sang on the advert when she 'came back'). It's an upbeat track yet I wouldn't really call it a good party song. It's quite a happy song though. Their voices are good on this one. This song is rumoured to be their next single.* Hanging On A Star* This is quite a bland song with nothing going for it. It's quite repetitive and every time I hear it , I hit the 'next' button on my CD Player straight away.
Side Chick * As soon as I heard this song , I instantly liked it. It has a real 'Sugababes' sound to it. I love the chorus ; it's so catchy. This song is addictive and I love the lyrics : "If you want a sly chick/On the Side Chick/It's not you and I/Boy you better get your head checked" . This track is another 'girl-power' song! One of my favourite songs on the album!
Unbreakable Heart * This song begins quite simply : a twinkle of a piano , joined by (I think) Heidi and then Keisha. The verses aren't that good , the music seems to be all over the place ; as though a group of kids aged five have just been handed a selection of different instruments. It gets a bit better on the chorus though ; but this song doesn't really stand out to me!
* Sunday Rain * As soon as I heard the piano and choir of 'ooohs' at the beginning of this song , I knew I was going to like it. This song has quite a romantic feel to it and is quite dramatic. The girls' vocals are just perfect on this track and their voices blend together really well. I think this is my favourite song on the album. I think they should release this as their next single : it would definitely get to number one! (In my opinion , anyway!)* Every Heart Broken * This song really shows off the girls voices. I love Keisha's voice! There is a key change in this song although I think it happens a bit soon and should have been a bit later on in the song. I find the more I listen to this track the more I love it!
* Beware * This song as the title suggests , has quite a dark feel to it. it's quite dramatic. The girls appear quite mature on this track. This song really shows of Amelle's voice ; she's an ok-singer , but I much prefer Mutya's (the Sugababe Amelle replaced) voice , if I'm honest) A really good song though : one of my favourites!
* Nothing's As Good As You * The chorus is quite unusual ; I love it! It has a catchy tune! I think that this is a song that grows on you the more times you hear it. My favourite part of the song is when Keisha starts to sing on the third verse as I think she has the best voice.
* Sound Of Goodbye * This is a beautiful ballad which shows of the girls' voices. The beginning of the chorus reminds me a bit of their song 'ugly'. This song is quite a typical 'Sugababes Song'. I really like this song!
* My Overall Opinion * I think this is an Ok album , but I don't think it is as good as their previous stuff. There is a few songs on here which I like , however there are others which I feel are not so good , and make me think that they were just used as fillers to 'fill the album up'. I have two views on the three bonus tracks on the album. On one hand I feel that they are pointless as they are just different versions of their three previously released songs (About You Now Acoustic etc…) , yet on the other hand I think that they are good if you're a big fan of the girls as you will no doubt want to hear as many songs of theirs as you can , and I suppose it gives the buyer more for their money. I think this album mainly focuses on the girls voices rather than the music itself. I think that the girls voices are good on this album , especially Keisha's. Keisha could definitely make it as a solo star! It's good that this CD has a mixture of songs on it as hopefully there will be something to suit everyone's tastes. My personal favourite songs are the ballads , however I'm not too keen on some of the up-beat tracks. To be honest I wasn't that impressed with this album. I don't think it's as good as their album 'Three' (Bring Mutya back!!).
I wouldn't really recommend this album unless you're a big fan of the band.
