This album is quite old, being release back in 2004, at least it feels old, I do own albums older, but that is not the point. Anyway, if you are completely unaware of Nelly and his genre of music - then you sound like my dad! - then I will introduce him. Nelly is one of several hundred rappers, however he has been lucky finding success after releasing his album Country Grammar, since then he has released at least three other albums. Suit was released at the same time as another Nelly album, Sweat, this was an adventurous action releasing two albums at the same time and some people began to claim that Nelly was getting too cocky, but they were both successful. Suit claimed to be an album containing his smoother, sexier songs, while Sweat, as the name indicates, was to have his faster, more dancey songs. I chose Suit, if I had been richer I might have gone for them both, but I wasn't richer and I am quite content with Suit.
Nelly's music is a mix of R&B with a hip-hop vibe, popular
with teenagers and youths of today - including ME! Obviously not all youths like it, but what I try to say is that rarely an adult of say over 35 (don't take my word as complete truth, it was a guestimate) enjoys this type of music, obviously some may enjoy it but enough of my ramblings.
Track listing for album: 1. Play It Off 8/10 2. Pretty Toes 7/10 3. My Place 9/10 4. Paradise 8/10 5. She Don't Know My Name 7/10 6. N Dey Say 9/10 7. Woodgrain and Leather Wit a Hole 7/10 8. In My Life 8/10 9. Over and Over 9/10 10. Nobody Knows 7/10 11. Die For You 8/10 12. Ride Wit Me (Remix) (UK Bonus track) 9/10 13. Dilemma (UK Bonus track) 9/10
Conveniently I have rated five of the songs 9/10, that wasn't on purpose, complete chance. But I will now go into detail on each of these top 5 songs, explaining why it is so good that you should buy the album.
My Place (Feat Jaheim) - If I am not mistaken this is the first song Nelly released from the album, and every time I hear it I get images of watching TOTP, with Nelly and Jaheim singing by a pool. It has a nice beat and tune, tune being smooth, but brought back to life by the decent beat. Why do I like this song? It is smooth, positive and relaxing. This song puts a smile onto my face and reminds me of summer, it is most definitely a summery song!
N Dey Say - When I first played the CD in my bedroom this was the song that caught my notice, the beginning reminded me of another song, though until this day I cannot say which one. It has a beautiful, but simple tune that fades perfectly into the background allowing us to concentrate on Nelly, who sounds amazing. I am still trying to work out whether he is rapping or singing - either way he sounds pretty amazing. Why do I like this song? It's sweet, and the lyrics are emotional, talking about many pressing issues, like homelessness, drug crime, single motherhood and killing. Yet it doesn't sound too heavy, it is done so while the issues matter, we don't feel like we're at school listening to some speech about them.
Over and Over (Feat Tim McGraw) - I don't know who Tim McGraw is, but he beings an almost country feel to this song, which sounds great, it is a good song - sad, well a song about breaking up would be sad. The tune is once again simple, but not boring, it allows our singers to be heard. Why do I like this song? The song is kind of depressing, but sometimes an album needs a depressing song, to mellow out the happier ones - it is relaxing, simple and uncomplicated, although at times it feels a little repetitive, it isn't all in your head, is it Nelly?!
Ride Wit Me (Remix) - This song is great, do you remember the original Ride Wit Me? Well this is obviously the remix, it has been given a new lease of life, a good energetic beat which has me wanting to dance, and yet it still manages to retain a smooth feel. Why do I like this song? Why wouldn't I? It is addictive, a great tune but energetic, it could never bore me, ever!
Dilemma (Feat Kelly Rowland) (Remix) - Dilemma was a massive hit almost two years ago, and the remix is fantastic, the beat has been brought up a lot, making it even more addictive! It has an extra rap, who I think, but cannot guarantee is by someone called Ali, this adds another dimension to the song, and it sounds great. Why do I like this song? Well the original was fantastic, but this is even better! Nothing else to say.
Summary - This album will not appeal to everyone, but I personally love it, there are some great songs on it, there are some weaker tracks. But if you think this might be your type of music, then I highly recommend that you buy it, if you haven't already. It costs £10.99 plus P&P on amazon.co.uk - http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002VJY54/qid=1136112732/sr=8-1/ref=pd_ka_1/026-3463923-0136400 or you might find it in the likes of HMV on the high street.
