Advantages: Great story and characters Disadvantages: May seem a bit missing if read previous Jack Caffery books
I was lucky enough to win a competition to receive all of Mo Hayder's books a couple of years ago and had really enjoyed them, so when I saw this new book in paperback in Smiths I had to buy it.
The Blurb
Nine Feet under water in Bristol harbour, a police diver finds a human hand. The fact that there's no body attached is disturbing, but even more disturbing is the discovery a day later of the matching hand and the shocking evidence that the victim was still alive when they were removed.
Recently arrived from London, DI Jack Caffery is now part of Bristol's Major Crime Investigation Unit. His search for the victim leads him to a dark and sinister underworld; a place more terrifying than anything he has known before.
My Opinion
I have read the previous two Jack Caffery books but they had been set in London and it seems as ...
Advantages: Some great rock tinged soul and funk songs Disadvantages: Not enough original material
and might not have been a direction either the band or the fans particularly wanted Thunder to go in.
Whilst I can't say for sure that this latter option is the truth, I can certainly see how it may work. Some Thunder fans were upset by how unlike the untraditional Thunder sound "Moving Swiftly Along" sounded, which was to miss the point - it wasn't a Thunder album! But if those fans didn't like that album much, they're really going to hate "Mo's Barbeque"
They're going to hate it from the opening bars of "Desire", where the horn intro sounds like it would have been right at home on the soundtrack to "The Commitments". It's got a sound very much like some of the old soul classics with the horns and piano and you'd be pretty hard pressed to tell that this band are more used to playing pop-rock music until a couple of minutes in, where ...
Advantages: Beautifully composed, great lyrics, jazzy, bluesy Disadvantages: Too short!
Legs and Keep It Simple are both funny songs. Shave your legs being about how Keb's woman can just be herself, not 'shave her legs' or 'wash my clothes' etc. Whilst Keep it Simple for example comments on the variety of different caffiene based drinks available at a coffee shop with Keb singing 'just get me a small cup of coffee and let me get the hell outta here.'
All songs, all beautiful, uncluttered, bluesy numbers which sound clean and refreshing. KebMo's voice is just delicate and crisp, and you can almost see the expression on his face coming through the singing.
If you've not ventured into Blues before, this album is probably a good introduction because it's not hardcore blues, and the transparency of the lyrics really make you want to listen again and again. It's easy, catchy, clean, refreshing and cool.
Enjoy! ...

Album Notes
On 2006's SUITCASE, Keb' Mo's third studio outing in less than three years, the Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter/guitarist (aka Kevin Moore) presents another set of soulful, accessible blues. The album begins with the light, lilting "Your Love," and continues in a relaxed and generally romantic mood with songs such as the gentle "Still There for Me," the lovelorn "Rita," and the whimsical "I See Love," creating a breezy mood that stands in notable contrast to his '04 protest record, PEACE...BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND. Given Mo's deep, easy-going vocals and straightforward, nimble guitar playing, this disc has a charm that will appeal to both curious newcomers and longtime Mo fans.
