'Yeomen of the Guard? is a more ?serious? Gilbert and Sullivan opera and this perhaps ... more
accounts for it?s original lukewarm reception, as it ran contrary to audience expectation. Set in the Tower of London in the sixteenth century, the libretto concerns a jester, Jack Point and his girl Elsie, who plot to aid a war hero who is sentenced to die in the Tower. That hero, Colonel Fairfax, has been condemned to die by a relative who stands to inherit his fortune. Fairfax wants to marry someone just before his execution, so that his bride will inherit instead. Jack sets Elsie up to marry Fairfax, thinking it will do no harm. However, Fairfax escapes and remains in the area in disguise. He spots Jack trying to woo Elsie and gives a demonstration of the proper way to woo, winning Elsie's affections himself. In the end, everyone pairs off except Jack, who loses Elsie to Fairfax and is heartbroken.

Advantages: Full of majestic English themes. A tragi-comedy that was nearly Grand Opera Disadvantages: None
The operetta ?Yeomen of the Guard? turned out to be the penultimate major popular collaboration between WS Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan. It came at a time of increasing difficulties in communications between the two musical protagonists and in its way is a departure from what had become their trademark Opera Comique?.
The story is a tragic one ? a simple jester losing the love of his life to a condemned and then reprieved hero ? interspersed by moments of comedy. Although it is not made clear from the initial libretto, it is the only work where one of the cast probably dies at the end (unless you count the hellish departure of John Wellington Wells from ?The Sorcerer?). From the musical point of view it was the nearest that Sullivan came to writing ?a Grand Opera? (indeed they dropped the term ?comic? from their descriptions). It ...
Advantages: Comfortable, small and friendly. Disadvantages: Not in the city centre if you prefer to be where the action is.
We stayed at Sullivans in March 2007, and will be returning in 2009. This is a 3 star hotel and is fairly typical of the standard. It is not an up-market affair, just a comfortable, friendly hotel with lovely views over the river and the city skyline. The location on Mounts Bay Road is convenient for both the city and the surrounding areas, being on the free Blue Cat bus route. The bus stop is right outside the hotel as is the one for the main bus services. Getting to Fremantle and the local beaches is very straightforward as the hotel is on a main road out of the city. Bicycles are available for free to explore, and the freeway is close by. The hotel has a small car park but there is also a chance of parking on the road nearby.
Sullivans is very popular with Australians as well as overseas visitors. The food is good and reasonable ...
Advantages: The pivotal opera in the G&S catalogue Disadvantages: Rather lightweight compared with what was to follow
The names Gilbert and Sullivan evoke sentiments of a quintessentially Victorian England. Even if you do not know their work by name you will be familiar with the toe-tapping, whistle provoking musical entrances of the Lord High Executioner (?The Mikado?); the peers of the realm (?Iolanthe?) or the Tower Warders (?Yeomen of the Guard?). You will also know ? although maybe not easily placed ? such songs as ?Take A Pair Of Sparkling Eyes? (?The Gondoliers?), ?A Wand?ring Minstrel, I? (?The Mikado?) and ?A Policeman?s Lot Is Not A Happy One? (?Pirates Of Penzance?). The libretti and compositions have become woven into the fabric and historical memory of this country.
Depending on your definitions there are fourteen titles in the catalogue (including the now lost ?Thespis?). The most popular of the ?big five? ? and those now most ...
