Advantages: Some cracking tracks by big names. Disadvantages: Couple of tracks that do not belong.
The Jazz Album - 2003
I don't think it will come as a major surprise to anyone that reads my reviews that I am a bit of a Jazz fan so when I saw this double CD for 50p at Barnsley Sunday Market (like a boot sale only with stalls under cover), saw the discs were in good condition, I could not resist.
Now it is true to say that I have many of the 36 tracks already, but even if there was one that I did not have, it is worth 50p, for goodness sake, at 79p a track from iTunes, I am already in front! To the jazz fan it would be good value at full price, but I suggest shopping around, not so cheap on Amazon new, but is okay 2nd hand.
I am not going to review every one of the 36 tracks, which would bore the reader. I will give you a song list at the end for your perusal, and will now give you a flavour of what is good and not so good ...

If you want to know the whys of the history of jazz and the blues you really do need this packed programme.
Are there any extras? No. But why would you need any??

Advantages: Fantastic range of great tunes and songs Disadvantages: None
(So Many Times and Peg 'o' My Heart) show the smooth and terribly sophisticated side of Jack Teagarden's music, whilst the next track, Swingin' on the teagarden Gate, is entirely different. So full of the jazz ethos that you can almost see the people dancing to it. So Many Times and Peg 'o' My Heart are for slow dancing. Then it's back to the smoother sound with Teagarden's rather melancholy Can't we Talk It Over, a ballad about a young man bemoaning the fact that he and his girlfriend are on the verge of splitting up.
After four great (but different)classics from Teagarden we next hear from a young Louis Armstrong. The first track from Louis is Melancholy Blues. This is a great blues and jazz crossover. Yes, it is jazz, but yes, at the same time it could pass muster for a blues classic, too.
The other Three tracks form Louis ...
