When I first saw the colourful video for "The Rain (supa dupa fly)", I rushed out to buy Missy Elliott's album. Although primarily worried that I had been too hasty in my purchase (I have bought many albums on the strength of just one song and been sorely disappointed), I knew I had made the right decision after the first listening. I bought Supa Dupa Fly about two years ago and I am still listening to it constantly.
Having gone platinum in America, it features big hip-hop artists such as Busta Rhymes, Lil' Kim, Da Brat, Aaliah, Ginuwine, 702 and of course her partner in crime Timbaland. Although I like his music in general, I was not overly impressed by Busta Rhymes' contributions to the intro or the outro (having said this, I find these a little pointless anyway).
For 'Pass Da Blunt', Missy takes the Musical Youth chorus of 'Pass The Dutchie' and successfully updates it - this is one of the highpoints of the album. Unfortunately, the album is somewhat marred by 'They don't wanna f*** wit me', with lyrics such as "get it off your chest, you know who's the best". This, quite frankly, is getting a little tedious since every rapper seems to be saying that they are the best.
Timbaland is noted as featuring in just two of the tracks but this is little credit for what he has actually done. According to the sleeve, Tim Mosley (AKA Timbaland) has co written all of the songs, produced and mixed all of the tracks. He has also provided those infamous ‘uh huh’s in the background of nearly every song.
In conclusion, I would definitely recommend this to any hip-hop fan. Missy's talent is obvious but listening to this has left me wondering how much is Timbaland’s work and would it sound half as good without his input.
