I first heard the "Supa Dupa Fly" single without realising it was a Missy Elliott record. It struck me as yet another revamped (or should that be updated? or murdered?) late 60s / 70s song. Well, there have been so many lately, haven't there? Lady Marmalade, Shaggy's Angel, Ronan Keating's Words... (actually that last one was dire the first time around too, so I'll stop there).
It's just that, "I can't stand the rain" by Ann Peebles (no, not the later Tina Turner version) is such a good song. and I really don't think it can be improved upon. And it had rain sound effects in it, it was about rain, or feeling miserable because of the rain. It wasn't about driving in the Jeep to the beach, it had nothing to do with flies, supa dupa or otherwise.
Since hearing the Missy Elliott version of the song, I have of course realised it's by her. I've also seen the video, which is fine, with the blow-up black bin liner outfit, and plenty of body parts seeming to undergo a strange blow-up process at the drop of a hat. It's all a little surreal, with a bright coloured (stark primary colours especially) Teletubbies-style landscape. I got a little bit bored with it towards the end, though - not sure if it was the video, the song, or both.
The lyrics are a tiny bit rude, but, to be honest, only a tiny bit - things like "can we get kinky tonight?" and "when I play my yoyo". Funny that, I've read a lot about Missy being a sexually-upfront feminist icon, but "can we get kinky tonight" sounds a little on the polite, even perhaps a little submissive, side. Maybe that's just my take on it.
So, overall, The Rain (Super Dupa Fly) is not my kind of thing, and quickly becomes irritating.
Now, don't get me wrong, I like Missy a lot - I think she's destined to be as big as... well, if does all the right things she could be as well respected as Aretha Franklin - she'll never match her voice, but it's not even though a great voive is really a requisite nowadays. Get Ur Freak On is, in my opinion, just incredible.

Get Ur Freak On is indeed incredible...one of the year's defining singles. No time for her other/earlier stuff, sadly. Good to see you're still writing! Cheers. J.

Great op - but I prefer the former to the latter - if you know what I mean!!!

I only rated this as helpful because I think the category is actually for the album Supa Dupa Fly, not the single. A good op nonetheless :)
