In my quest for anything scandinavian and having been a fan of Zyklon, I found out about Myrkskog (there are band members in both) and immediately bought this album back in 2005. This album to me, is death metal perfection. I am 100% convinced that any true death/black metal fan would love this. And certainly with this album they have moved from Blackened death metal to technical death metal from their previous album release of deathmachine (2000). Both equally good in their own right, but for me, this album is far more well thought out and produced.
The more I look into bands from this part of the world, the more impressed I become as you will note, most of the bands I review are from Europe and scandinavia as the more I look, the more I find and the more i want to keep on looking. And out of all of the great bands i have found, Myrkskog have to be one of the best finds, sadly I have not seen them live.
You may get slightly annoyed at my rantings about
morbid angel in the track listing, but I think this is part of the reason I love this album so much, is because i got into death metal because of Morbid Angel and i know every one of their songs and listening to this album brings on a bit of nostalgia for me, maybe i am just a sentimental metaller!
Here is a track list for you:
1. Intro 1:21, the sounds of a stormy winterland are unleashing something sinister from the bowels of hell nicely leads into the crunching riffage of
2. Domain of the superior 3.03. very nice combination of awesome riffing and double bass beats and blast beats complimented with growling that fit the music perfectly without overpowering at all. It's amazing how much complex riffing they manage to fit in 3 short minutes.
3. Detain the skin 3.40, fast paced, evil, complex, nice!
4. Trapped in torment 4.01 Brilliant, I absolutely love this song, I usually replay this song after listening as around 1.30 into the song it sounds very reminiscent of morbid angel from covenant and dominate albums. I love the time and tempo changes in this song, again I think it is a true testament to a band that they can produce so much, non repetitive music in just one song, i.e. they rarely repeat any 4 bars, it is constantly changing, even subtely, flawless!
5. Indisposable deaths 4.27, a very cool intro, throughout the song, a solid performance, some great technical drumming, catchy riffing and even what some 'hard core' folk would almost call a 'breakdown'. This song has elements of black metal, death metal, brutality and very technical, it is only missing the kitchen sink!
6. Over the gore 4.49, these guys deserve an award for the best intros on a death metal album. As i sit here listening to the music, they have repeatedly nutted out some of the best intros to songs I have ever heard. This song, once it starts, grooves like you wouldn't believe, you can picture a mosh pit moving with this song, again elements of classic Morbid angel are obvious to the discerning listener. Fantastic song, THIS IS DEATH METAL as it should be, goodnight, thanks for coming!
7. Blood ejaculation 3.27 Fast and uncompromising, listening to the song, the title fits perfectly, have a listen, you will get it!
8. Utter human Murder 4.13 A slowed down intro lets you quickly know that song is going to be even quicker then most of the others, and doesn't it change tempos perfectly, awesome technical riffing, again the vocals, although don't change much in depth and tone, don't really need to as they have it nailed as it is. And the more I listen to this album, this is the album morbid angel should have produced, rather then, well, you know which one/s!!!! (don't mean to keep harping on about morbid angel, the resemblence is striking!)
9. Bleeding wrists 3.10 Last song for the album, brilliant blast beating, real energy in this song, time changes, tempo changes and the last minute has an awesome intensity rarely heard in many bands of this genre.
10. outro 1.19, mancing electro sounds.
.Why these guys split in 2007 is beyond me? Perhaps a failing of advertising, band members being conflicted between Myrkskog and Zyklon?? I am just relieved to know that myrkskog has reformed and will hopefully produce some more stuff for us all to devour soon.
Normally I would say buy this album, in an effort to support the band, but since they have split and although they say they have reformed, I don't know if they will produce more stuff, so, buy their music asap as it may become a collectable and trust me, this music is worth collecting!!!! Hails!
