A Musician! Review ofSupernatural - Santanaby
KingHerrod
Advantages: Diversity and talent Disadvantages: Not to everyone's tastes
This is an album by somebody that can play! Yes a real live musician, no samples etc. The album has great latin rythms and some scorching tracks and the best thing about it is the diversity. Santana duets with great artists and his guitar playing is amazing.
Some tracks rock, like smooth and others are a more chilled Latin flavour. It is a great album and different from most things that you will hear in mainstream, UK music.
All the tracks are ...

Advantages: Great tracks and guest stars Disadvantages: specific music taste required on the whole
Supernatural is the 1999 album from the Mexican Latin sensation Carlos Santana. It is said that this album kickstarted his career after a faltering from the guitar supremo in the mid-1990s. It is a magnificent collection of music with Latin and Cuban themes, and incorporates the musical talents of modern genius minds such as Wyclef Jean, Eric Clapton and Eagle-Eye Cherry. Track 5 'Smooth', featuring the vocal talents of Matchbox Twenty lead singer ... ...has gone 15 times platinum, and has won 9 Grammy awards.
I really like this album, particularly Everlast's invlovement in track 2, 'Put Your Lights On'. It is of a specific Latin/Cuban style, though, and will thus will only appeal to an audience favouring this style.
These are the tracks:
1. (Da Le) Taleo
2. Love Of My Life (featuring Dave Matthews)
3. Put Your Lights On (featuring Everlast)
4. Africa Bamba
5. Smooth (featuring Rob Thomas)

Advantages: Smooth Disadvantages: Apart from a couple of songs, it does nothing for me
Last year Carlos Santana experienced a real resurgence,and everyone was raving about the "Supernatural" album. It won Grammy awards, and lots of other kinds of awards. I personally was very taken by the single "Smooth", which I thought was brilliant - a kind shuffle with a distinctive vocal (sort of Robert Palmer meets Robbie Robertson), which basically makes me feel like I should be sitting at a poolside drinking tequila.
But then… I heard the ... ...problem with it.
First of all, one look at all the collaborators (Eric Clapton, Eagle Eye Cherry, Lauryn Hill and others), it smacks of someone trying to revive an ailing career - you know, the old stalwarts who are always helping out old friends, and one or two trendy stars - it's all designed to appeal to as wide an audience as possible.
The album includes a couple of tracks - the opening track "(Da le) Yaleo" and the slowie "El Farol", that ...

Advantages: Carlos back to form with super collaboration album Disadvantages: A couple of weaker tracks
...Santana chose his collaborations for Supernatural very well. In particular the track Maria Maria’ with Wyclif Jean blends the best of both artistes. Smooth’ and Migra’ also stand out, the latter having almost an Irish-Black-dance feel to it.
Can I find any cause for criticism ? only that sometimes there is a feel that one or two of the guitar solos are a little contrived within a song and exist as an add-on rather than are integrated within the ...

Super, Super, Natural!
I had to update this. After some more listening, some tracks deserve a better rating than I first gave. That is the change made on 08/11/2002
Hope you enjoy!

Before Shaman Came Along, There Was "Supernatural".
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This superb follow up to Santana's "Supernatural" masterpiece, has all the ingredients that made "Supernatural" a big hit in 1999, first in America, then here in the UK almost a year later. Introducing a new wave of young followers to Santana (Eric Clapton too, on it's last track). Whilst at the same time, introducing an older generations musical taste buds to the likes of: Rob Thomas (Matchbox Twenty), Everlast, Lauryn Hill, Eagle Eye Cherry, Wyclef Jean, Dave Matthews, Mano. Whilst none of these (with the exception...
Advantages: Rarity value and a great rendition of All Along the Watchtower Disadvantages: Availability can be a problem, as is price!
...Matthews Band are quite possibly the most eclectic group around. They fuse African rhythms with a jazz/pop mix as well as anything else they come across that they like. This has led to the inclusion of a cajun feel on some of their tracks, whilst this CD seems to nod more towards Spanish/Latin influences. (A tradition continued in later work, including a duet with Carlos Santana on Supernatural).
As with Remember Two Things, many of these songs were recorded live, and the audience's appreciation seeps through.
Track Listing:
Recently - New true love. A really nice song about the beginnings of being in love, and the sense of certainty that brings.
Dancing Nancies - One of their most popular early songs, this time in a great acoustic style (see above). A definite winner.
Warehouse - Another odd release, which seems primarily...
...In my opinion this is one of the best songs on Santana's supernatural album. Produced by ex-fugee star Wyclef Jean, this single had all the makings to become a hit record and it has done. This is one of the songs on the album which has a more R'n'B flavour to it, but at the same time it still shows off Carlos Santana's amazing guitar skills. The vocals on this track are great as well. This is a smooth sounding summery song and is definitely worth spending a few minutes to listen to, I love it. This single is a must buy for any fan of Santana and hopefully will grab the attention of people who don't necessarily like Santana music but are fans of R'n'B. I think this track is definitely worth getting the album for....
