Although occasionally slipping into forgettable nonsense and camp luxuries, Supernature is the most consistent and solid album the duo have produced out of their first three records. Just don't go buying it in the expectation that it's a disco record.

Gregory moved emphatically away from the folky, filmic forays of their debut Felt Mountain to explore edgier, sexier themes. Supernature, their third long-player, continues to probe this more "adult" world, lashing together lascivious electro, cascading synths and the exhumed spirits of artists like Gary Numan and Giorgio Moroder. Lead single "Ooh La La", with its cosmetic sheen and hedonistic pop feel, is a good indicator for the rest of the album. The aphotic, flirtatious pulse of tracks like "Ride A White Horse" and "Koko" contrast subtly with spectral dream-pieces such as "Let It Take U" and "U Never Know", while Goldfrapp's vocals--dripping here with a digitized sensuality--and Gregory's arching soundscapes provide textural continuity. Occasionally vampish and consistently visceral, this is a classy excursion into Goldfrappian gothic dance-pop.

Advantages: Some really great tracks Disadvantages: A few awful, dire, boring, tracks
"Switch me on, turn me up...."
Goldfrapp are back with their third album after the massive hit album "Black Cherry". Forming in 99 Alison Goldfrapp, former fine art student and Will Gregory, composer, after discovering they shared a love of the same music, the same art and basically seemed like two peas in a pod. Their sound has the grittiness of electro, catchy pop vocals and distinct glam rock feel. Sounds rather odd, I know, but works well. "Supernature" ... ...a household name. But they aren't any strangers to success. Their debut "Felt Mountain" was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize whilst 2003's Black Cherry was a chart success. However "Supernature" has presented them with a challenge, it would be all too easy to go back into the studio and make another 10 tracks like that off "Black Cherry". I was very sceptical about this album. How would they progress with their sound? And would the live performances, ...

Advantages: Superb! Disadvantages: Can't think of any!
I will be as brief as possible:
Put it this way, this is the album that Madonna dreams of making but never could. This is superb pop music and Alison Goldfrapp sounds even better live than she does on the record. She is underrated in my opinion. As a side issue, if you get the opportunity to see Goldfrapp then do. You will not be disappointed. Talent in action!
If you are usually left feeling disappointed with albums full of fillers, bar a few ... ...faultless quality throughout the album - all tracks are electro-pop at its finest. There are diverse influences of T-Rex on Ooh La La and even hints of Bjork on Let It Take You. If you like Madonna and Kylie at their sophisticated best then this will appeal. If you like 80's synth-pop like Depeche Mode then you too would probably enjoy this album. ...

Album Notes: Arguably Goldfrapp's most accessible and immediately engaging album, SUPERNATURE features the British duo mixing sensual electronica with catchy pop to wonderful effect. Sounding like the result of Ziggy Stardust crash-landing in Prince's studio during a session with Kylie Minogue, this outing sparkles with willful decadence and glamour, opening with the T. Rex-like techno-stomp of "Ooh La La." Alison Goldfrapp's voice often recalls both Minogue and Kate Bush, with the music generally veering towards the dance-floor furor of the former. Though the record does present slow and/or mid-tempo tracks, most notably the shuffling "You Never Know" and the dreamy "Let It Take You," Goldfrapp and Will Gregory's synth-soaked textures are frequently employed to a clubby, crowd-pleasing end, as on the sassy "Lovely 2 C U" and the raucous "Satin Chic." Although much of SUPERNATURE lacks the moody, overtly cinematic atmosphere of earlier Goldfrapp releases, most listeners will be too busy careening around the room to care.
Album Reviews: Rolling Stone (p.63) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he cabaret tune 'Satin Chic' gets a twist with electric player piano and a twitchy percussive stomp so evil it makes your skin crawl. Toxic and delicious, SUPERNATURE will make you do bad things -- and like it."
