Once again, I can't believe that state this op was in, but it was one of my first. Anyways, how can I inspire a Pixies revival if I don't write a good op on their albums? Well, here comes the re-vamped version...
Surfer Rosa... an influential piece made even better with the addition of Come on Pilgrim on the CD version sold over here in Britain. This was the first full-length album to be released by Frank and his motley crew, and is seen by many as the standard for modern alt rock/grunge that must be lived up to. Just ask people like Dave Grohl... (Ex-Nirvana drummer, Foo Fighter's frontman).
If you want to know about the style of the music,- I'm not going into too much detail as I'll end up writing this so many times in subsequent updates and have done so already - it's a four piece guitar rock group, encorporating very early grunge, alt rock, and even a bit of folk and Latino style.
The tracks are as follows (including the tracks from Come On Pilgrim, as most of us Brits can only get the joint copy) (*I apologise if they're out of order as my copy of the CD's at uni, so I'm getting them off the internet...):
1. Bone Machine* 2. Break My Body 3. Something Against You 4. Broken Face 5. Gigantic* 6. River Euphrates 7. Where is My Mind?* 8. Cactus 9. Tony's Theme 10. Oh My Golly! 11. Vamos 12. I'm Amazed 13. Brick Is Red 14. Caribou* 15. Vamos 16. Isla de Encanta 17. Ed is Dead 18. The Holiday Song* 19. Nimrod's Son* 20. I've Been Tired 21. Levitate Me
The album begins with a strange choice... 'Bone Machine'. This is itself a fantastic song, but perhaps a little too mellow to open an album that has so much power in songs such as 'Broken Face' and 'Tony's Theme'.
One very important question we should be asking is where were the Pixies minds writing this album. Honestly, this is no criticism, but where on earth did they come up with the lyrics to 'Caribou' and 'Where is my mind?'(of Fight Club fame)? 'Where is my mind?' is definitely my most loved Pixies song, as it offers the serenity that you get from so many Pixies songs with the wonders of Joey's guitar.
One other key point... listen to 'Levitate Me' - definitely a Nirvana inspiration unless I'm very much mistaken...
So, why should you buy this album? It's cheap (usually under £10, even in HMV!!), it's got over 20 tracks for you to get your teeth into, (six of which appear on the best of, Death to the Pixies - highlighted with an *), and each song is its own unique piece of listening pleasure... Please try it!!

Good to know what other Pixies fans think. I thought Come on Pilgrim was tacked on as it's not good enough to sell on it's own, but maybe I should stop just playing the first half after all.

A Pixies fan! (faints) (gets back up). Bone Machine is a great opener, well, I think so anyway! Nirvana were never ashamed of their Pixies-like sound, Kurt once said they sounded like "Black Flag being sodomised by Frank Black", or something like that. My memory's not what it used to be! "This is a song about a superhero named Tony, it's called Tony's Theme!" - genius. My fave every Pixies track is Gigantic, but hey, I could rail on about them forever... Cheers, P$
