The Pixies’ first album, although it was really only a mini-album, Come On Pilgrim can be found as part of a reissue CD coupled with the band’s second album, Surfer Rosa. This is a set that chronicles the band’s early years, and provides a cross-section of much of the Pixies’ musical styles.
This record includes many songs that are considered by die-hard Pixies fans as the best Pixies material. “Gigantic”, written, not by Black Francis, but by Kim Deal’s alias. This song was released as a single (a re-recorded version), but sadly did not reach a chart position to match its songwriting genius.
Also check out “Bone Machine” – a fantastic simplistic drum intro, kicking off the album, and notably “Caribou”, an incredible atmospheric song.
As I have already mentioned, this album is considered the best Pixies album, but I would recommend it only to existing fans who already have other Pixies albums, as new listeners may find Francis’ vocal style a bit extreme, and I could imagine being put off at first listen. Either way – buy this record!
