Joe Satriani realeased "Surfing with the alien" Back in 1987 where it gained instant popularity in the underground music scene for its new style of easy listening legato (smooth) playing as well as the almost legendary solos.
Joe satriani, known simply as SATCH! amongst his musical peers, gained huge respect for this album due to the diversity of the tracks and use of new or little known guitar techniques put to use with great effectiveness
Track List
1. Surfing With The Alien- 4:25- This iconic opening track features wah-wah riffs far removed from anything else of its time and a almost legendary pull of solo, The Riff of this track makes it one of the most memorable songs on the album as well as one of the most technically brilliant
2. Ice-9 -3.59- This song is an example of how joe can build complex and beatiful melody lines out of otherwise simple chord patterns, This song gives you a real sense of how joe likes to build up to solos. instead of diving right in there! as many do these days!
3. Crushing Day - 5:14- My favourite song on the album, This song is satriani at his best, a memorable melody line and a strong prominent chord sequence, this song builds up magnificently into one of my favourite solo sections, shows great use of the whammy bar skills and legato sections which he is famous for, a must try for any guitarist.
4. Always With Me, Always With You- 3:22 This song is a slow ballad style song featuring beautifully thought out melody with an almost vocal theme to them, see even mad guitarists have a light side!, the solo section to this song is pretty unique, displaying clear brilliance as always but with extremely smooth and melodic legato playing (hammer on's, pull off"s, slides) and great use of pedal tones (going back to the home note between notes to give as very sweet sound)
5.Satch Boogie- 3:13- a very up tempo song, with a very catchy melody line, as u would suggest from the title its kinda in a boogie style, its the song u want to dance like a madman too! ive never heard another song like this!
6.Hill Of The Skull - 1:48 a very short song, displaying very powerful chord changes, it would appear to me like satriani wrote this almost like an exercise, however it does have an intresting sound and a small but memorable tune.
7.Circles - 3:28- This song is a beautiful clean sounding song, clever and very melodic, a testiment to joes diverse playing ability, dont expect a nice classical style song all the way through, as this bursts rather abruptly into a legato style solo! and thats why we love it!!
8. Lords Of Karma - 4:48- Very unique song on the album, a very "arabian" sounding intro riff, which is built apon rather wonderfully in joes text book legato style.
9. Midnight - 1:42- wow, this song is short but its incredible famous! if you have been to a music shop on saturday morning you are guaranteed to have heard this! joe shows off some brillliant 2 hand pull off techniques.
10. echo- 5:38- one of the more easy listening songs on the album, very relaxed, nice melodys, good use of harmonics, even the build up sections in the song are very layed back and leisurely, a good end to the album.
This album was one of the first successful intrumental albums beaten only by joes later album "flying in a blue dream" a must listen for music fans and anyone who enjoys joes private genre of easy listening technically guitar.
