Surrender To The Blender King Prawn (1999 Spitfire records)
King Prawn are difficult to define and catagorize. King Prawn are a mix of ska punk (mainly) with a bit or rap and hip hop. This compliments the multi racial band- Devil hands would look like a cockney thug if he didn’t smile all the time and also be a genuinely nice bloke. Only the drummer’s name: Nikoli suggests that he may not be mono cultured. However Babar, especially in his stage gear, looks like an extra from Gandhi- totally bald with a massive beard and Al looks generally Asian. The album has a spooky intro and this leads into the Pixies-esque (in terms of volume and style change during one song) Someone to Hate. It is a fun album with clever lyrics. There is great singing from Al and everything fits together nicely. It’s like a small picture from the racial melting pot that London has become.
