Forsaken: This song is one of the softer, more catchy songs on the cd, much like I Walk Beside You from the previous cd in that it sounds radio friendly. The main riff of the song has to be one of the best guitar riffs on the cd. Song has a really catchy chorus, I would imagine this will be their second choice for a single from the cd after Constant Motion. more

In the Presence Of Enemies Part 1: This is part 1 of the epic that is In the Presence Of Enemies. Part 2 is the last song on the cd. This part of it is mostly instrumental and shows off how good dream theater are musically. Labrie doesn't come in till about 5 minutes into the song and then the song starts to pick up. This is a brilliant opener to the cd.
Constant Motion: This song sounds heavily influenced by Metallica and is the 2nd heaviest song on the cd behind The Dark Eternal Night. In a somewhat new vocal style, Portnoys vocals are heavily featured alongside Labrie's which gives the vocals an agressive style. Petrucci and Ruddess let loose in this song and have some crazy solo's. This song was picked to be the first single off of the cd and a promotional video has been made.
The Dark Eternal Night: By far the heaviest song on the cd, this song sounds influenced by Metallica, Pantera and even Meshuggah at points. Also like the previous song Petrucci lets loose with another crazy solo. At the end of the song theres probably the most headbang-able moment of the cd as they break into a Pantera like breakdown.
Repentance: This song continues the AA Saga. Compared to the previous songs in the saga(The Glass Prison / This Dying Soul / The Root of All Evil) this song is a bit of a rest break and is mellow throughout. Best moment of this song is the slowish solo by Petrucci at 4:40. This song features various guest singers in the prog/metal world, such as Steve Hogarth, Steven Wilson, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Chris Jericho, Corey Taylor and more.
Prophets of War: This song has lyrics of a political nature as can probably guess by the trackname. The song has a bit of a Muse vibe to it. The main hook of this song is very catchy, "Is it time to make a change, are we closer than before, can we help them break away, are we profiting from war?".
The Ministry of Lost Souls: This song is one of the more mellow songs of the cd. For the most part its a slow song with some emotional lyrics. Midway it picks up and Dream Theater show their instrumental side which is brilliant as always. Special mention has to go the amazing unison by Petrucci and Ruddess to lead back into the main theme of the song.
In The Presence Of Enemies Part 2: This has a darker feel to it than the first part of this song at the beginning of the cd. The song builds up slowly to the heavy chorus of "dark master within, I will fight for you, dark master of sin, now my soul is yours". This song is the perfect end to a brilliant Dream Theater cd, which lives up to the expectations that come after releasing the quality of cds which they have in the past.
Overall, this cd is very varied, has a lot of heavy moments to the cd but also has its fair share of mellow songs/segments. So it has something for everyone on this cd. I would recommend this cd to any Dream Theater fan, or to anyone looking to get into Dream Theater.
Advantages: Musicanship rivaled by very few in the world, Dream Theater possesses more "feel" now Disadvantages: A bit lacking for inspiration in the lyric department
...for a ninth outing. Systematic Chaos, reminiscent of their seventh release, Train of Thought, dives deep into the realms of prog-metal. Though Systematic Chaos allows each individual of Dream Theater to show off their technical prowess in ways we have heard in previous Dream Theater albums, a growth of musianship can be witnessed in the band, as well. Mike Portnoy's drumming continues to amaze, though not as show off-ey as previous Dream Theater ... ...so well. Systematic Chaos, though not as "in your face" as other Dream Theater releases, is incredibly intricate and beauiful in it own right. From the technically amazing instrument break of "The Dark Eternal Night" to the emotional brilliance of "The ministry of Lost Souls" and "Repentance," Systematic Chaos satisfys many cravings a prog fan may have.
Overall, I highly recommend Systematic Chaos for any Prog Rock/Metal fan. Specifically those ...

Advantages: Cohesive offering, great instrumentalists Disadvantages: the self indulgence is not to everyones tastes
dream theaters 9th studio album and their first with roadrunner records has alot riding on it. Being signed to roadrunner means that dream theater will get their get music heard by many new potential fans so this had to be a good record. Thankfully they hav pulled off an album that sounds modern and relevant to the current metal scene while still maintaining their progressive sound that their long time fans know and love. Kicking off the album with ... ...the impression that it will be a great album. returning to a technical progressive rock sound reminiscent of the mid section of the song octavaium from the last album of the same name, a good album opener. they then calm things down abit (but not much) with the gothic tinged metal anthem forsaken again a good song. They maintain a dark atmosphere throughout the album making it sound like a more cohesive effort than some previous dt offerings. Overall ...

Advantages: Complex Melodies and Harmonies, Great song concepts Disadvantages: Artwork is a little boring
This album is yet another fantastic creation of progressive metal band, Dream Theater.
The album comprises a total of 8 tracks, each containing a different concept. Forsaken for example is about a vampire and her victim.
The melodies are complex - standard when considering the musical abilities of each musician.
I would compare this album to previously released Dream Theater production - Train of Thought, and Scenes from a memory. It has thought ... ...ryhthms.
John Petrucci plays some incredible riffs on guitar - he is quite possibly one of the best guitarists in the world.
James LaBrie as usual presents the music with his powerful voice.
Some different approaches have been used in this album, not seen before by the band. In track 6 - Prophets of war, I detected element classic of Queen in the vocals.
This album is a great buy and should deserve many hours of play time.

Advantages: Heavy and emotionally charged Disadvantages: Simplistic in places
This album is the latest release from Dream Theater, and while it does contain all the basic ingredients needed for a Dream Theater album, it also has something different. It is much heavier than other releases and has much less variation. Whilst it is a good album, it is lacking when compared to other Dream Theater releases, although is has good lyrics and is musically good, it is far less complex than other albums by he band, and is much more focused ... ...a different album when compared to the bands back catalogue so much so that it barely seems like the same band at all, and is influenced much more by modern bands than classic bands. Dream Theater is basically Progressive Metal, but slightly more complex and intricate in places, and if you don't know what Prog-Metal is, pretty much it is the musicianship of Heavy Metal, with the thoughts and ideas behind the songs and bands like Pink Floyd and Gentle ...

Advantages: Classic Dream Theater, but with a new twist Disadvantages: More of a "poppy" style that Dream Theater's other work
This is a great album, because whilst still retaining the progressive nature which has been valuable to DreamTheater fans since the 1980's and the heavier style introduced on Train of Thought, Octavarium still manages to be a different album, with its own individual style.
The range of different song styles on this album is staggering, with the poppy U2esque style of I Walk Beside You, compared to teh PInk Floyd style of parts of the title track Octavarium. Possibly the only thing I would change about this album would be more focus on the progressive style of DreamTheater's earlier albums, such as Awake and Images and Words, and/or the heaviness which is found on Train of Thought, and later on SystematicChaos. ...
