composer Karol Szymanowski (1882-1937) finds Sir Simon Rattle well and truly in his element. Even more crucially, all three performances radiate inspirational commitment allied to a genuinely exhilarating sense of new discovery. Completed in 1916, the Third Symphony or Song of the Night--a setting for tenor, chorus and orchestra of texts by a 13th-century mystical Persian poet--remains one of the most sheer, intoxicating creations in all music. By contrast, the masterly and awesome Stabat Mater of 1926 (which Szymanowski himself rated as "perhaps my most profound and concentrated work") wears an altogether more loftily serene air, and its piercingly beautiful closing movement (track 6) will haunt you for days. Both here and in the wonderful Litany to the Virgin Mary (1931-3) the Polish soprano Elzbieta Szmytka produces the most ravishing sounds. If you've ever been bitten by the Górecki bug, make a bee-line for this ravishing collection! EMI's fastidiously balanced sound is astoundingly realistic to match. --Andrew Achenbach

Advantages: This is a recording containing excellent content, with wonderful sound quality due to top-notch recording technique, and the presence of stellarly talented artists. Disadvantages: It is often disappointing to be listening to a wonderful piece of music only to discover that merely a portion of the piece is contained on the recording.
...This is an eclectic and, at the same time, fascinating recording. It contains some of the more interesting repertoire of one of the USA's most famous and talented symphony orchestras, along with an assortment of conductors long-attached to the CSO. In short, my favorite piece among all of those contained in this collection, is the Mahler Symphony No. 8. For anyone who knows this piece, they will be more than pleased by this performance. The conducting, orchestra playing, choral singing and preparation, and soloist singing is almost unmatched. Especially notable is the performance of the Mater Gloriosa, a somewhat thankless role, performed especially beautifully by soprano Jann Jaffe. Of course, anyone who knows the piece cannot help but be drawn to this music. This famous "Symphony of a Thousand" is a masterpiece whose listening...

Incredible! Review ofElgar: Symphony No 3 - Sketches & Commentaryby
Neil
Advantages: Great work Disadvantages: none
...It is an amazing fact that a year after its first performance Anthony Payne's elaboration of Elgar's sketches for his Third Symphony have become part of the mainstream orchestral repertoire.
Payne, a musicologist and a composer, took on the monumental task of pieceing together the few sketches that Elgar left before his death and expanding them in a complete symphony. The results are incredible. Although Payne is cautious to guard against calling the symphony an original Elgar work (as so much was of Payne's invention)the piece has an unmistakable Elgar feeling.
Originally recorded by the partnership that gave the work's first performance (Andrew Davis and the BBC Symphony Orchestra) this new recording with the Bournemouth Symphony conducted by Paul Daniel (music director at English National Opera) is a much weightier and envigorating...
