Advantages: Spaced out Funk Disadvantages: None that I can see
George Cliniton is a genius nothing more and nothing less. From his work with Parlament through to P-Funk he has always pushed back the boundaries. He has influenced everyone from The Red Hot Chilli Peppers to Dr Dre and Prince. When a lot of artists get old the quality of their music goes down George Clinton has countered this by always being old (in my eyes anyway).
Musically the best way to describe the album is completley laid ... ...lays down on his solo stuff then you will love this, guess where Dr Dre took his blueprint from.
The first track (if anybody gets funked up(its gonna be you)) is a great peice of work with repetative trancy background female vocals creating a hypnotic effect, contrasted by a deep male vocal that just totally chills you out. When a lot of artists get old the quality of their music goes down George Clinton has countered this by always being old (in my eyes anyway).
Musically the best way to describe the album is completley laid back psychadelic funk. If you like the sounds Dr Dre lays down on his solo stuff then you will love this, guess where Dr Dre took his blueprint from.
The first track (if anybody gets funked up(its gonna be you)) is a great peice of work with repetative trancy background female vocals creating a hypnotic effect, contrasted by a deep male vocal that just totally chills you out. The bass sends chills down your spine just by the quality of the sound, at this point I am certainally funked up, a great mixture of old school funk mixed with new school ideas.
The album switches from frunk to hip hop and back again, showing the any difference between the two styles is only skin deep.
During the whole complex syncopated rythms dance around your brain, bass players get down and really scare you just at the quality of playing, synths and keyboards float around the stratosphere and angelic voices talk directley to you. The whole experience is one of being totally chilled out, and truly awesome. How many albums can you say are an expereinece and this one is. (well in my case quite a lot but then I am a strange being).
If you are a fan of old or new school funk then I can whole hearedly recomend this album. If you are just curious then once again buy this album and if you only get a fraction of the enjoyment I have had out of this album then your money has been well spent.

Album Reviews
Vibe (6/96, p.149) - "...Clinton heads back to the future...evoking grooves of early '70s funk, and bringing back on board...P-funk all-stars....Clinton also renews his ties with the Hip Hop Nation..." Q (8/96, p.116) - 3 Stars - Good - "...This first full-on P-Funk outing in 20 years...combines lazy, chanted choruses that draw on Clinton's doo-wop roots, an expert rhythm section and a righteous sense that this brand of swinging, old-school funk needs time to grow..." Entertainment Weekly (6/14/96, pp.58-59) - "...T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M. finds [Clinton] front and center; crooning and murmuring his trademark puns and dirty jokes in a relaxed manner....He persists in the creation of vital funk music..." - Rating: A- Alternative Press (11/96, p.71) - 4 (out of 5) - "...this is about the awesome power of a fully operational mothership..."
