A Fine Single Malt from Tain

Advantages: Smooth so very smooth. Nice Flavour. Hint of Smokiness
Disadvantages: Pricey. Not that widely available.

The biggest selling single malt whisky in its native Scotland happens to be Glenmorangie, 10 year old and this is one of the finest whiskies that I have ever drunk. The distillery is at Tain, Ross-Shire ,far in the North of Scotland, and the elegant swan neck of the distillery still is apparently the tallest to be found in the Highlands. Visitors are very welcome to visit the distillery and Glenmorangie, which was founded in 1843 and now owned by Leith-based Macdonald and Muir ,also have their very own web site. Initially its business was very localized -selling single casks to pubs and hotels in the area between Inverness and Dornoch.Indeed it actually started as a brewery and was later converted into a distillery. In the land of Giants and Gods

Advantages: a classic scile of celtic rock
Disadvantages: may sound dated to some

So whose heard of a Celtic progressive folk rock concept album? Surely I made that up? You all know that I have a fairly odd taste in music but the aforementioned category must be a figment of my imagination. Hardcore country jazz or ambient classical death metal is probably more believable. But I kid you not, whilst the later two are the products of my alcohol addled imagination, the former neatly sums up a band called Horslips and their 1976 album "The Book of Invasions." Seen by many as a return to their earlier sound, like their second album, "The Tain," it is based on stories that come from Irish mythology. The original Book of Invasions is a semi-mythical record of the subsequent races that controlled ancient Ireland. The album is subtitled "A Celtic Symphony" and that neatly sums up the nature of the album. It is a concept album ...

A Jewel in the Crown

Advantages: Open all year, excellent course, not too expensive
Disadvantages: That north wind!!

Tain golf course, I believe, is a hidden jewel in the North of Scotland, often overlooked for Royal Dornoch which is a near neighbour. Tain overlooks the Dornoch Firth in a beautiful setting in the highlands with a backdrop of mountains on one side and the sea on the other, ideal for a round of golf on a beautifully kept, very challenging links course. It is only 35 miles from Inverness, making it very accessible to visitors and there are numerous hotels and guest houses in the area including some top class hotels. The course itself is a Tom Morris design, built in 1890 - 6404 yards long (SSS 70 mens medals, 73 for women) with some very interesting and some very difficult holes.
