This is a pretty good although not outstanding effort from legendary underground New York MC MF Doom. Recorded under the alias King Geedorah, a lot of the album references the monster movies from which King Geedorah was taken (Godzilla-style movies in the 60's). There are many skits sampling scenes from these movies, which can hinder the flow of the album slightly on occasions, but generally add to the monster-movie vibe of the record as a whole.
Lyrically Doom flexes nicely across each track, with his rugged, lisping style carrying well throughout. Most tracks are in the battlle-rap vein, mixing up various similes/punchlines and observations, with a couple tackling more serious subject matter (such as the gloomy 'I Wonder').
Production-wise the whole album is very raw, but also very well-executed, using b-movie samples and crusty wax to produce a set of unique beats that fit the concept of the album and match well with Doom's unglamorous delivery.
Fans of MF Doom, Madvillian etc and the underground New York scene in general will definitely be into this, and as an album it has more character than many of its peers, as the b-movie theme gives it a definite identity and makes it a little more accessible.
If you're into G-Unit and Eminem, forget about it. If you like your hip-hop raw, true, and full of character, this is right up your street.
