Advantages: Magical, exotic, thrilling storytelling Disadvantages: None for me!
I first came across Eva Ibbotson at the age of four, when I had an audio tape of a wonderful story called the Secret of Platform 13. I was delighted, then, when nearly ten years later Journey to the River Sea cropped up in the Carnegie Medal reading list at my school, and quickly became a firm favourite with myself and all of my friends.
Journey to the River Sea is set in Brazil, at the time of the Rubber Barons of the Amazon. At the centre of the story is Maya, the orphan of two adventurous archaeologist parents, living in a reputable girls? school in London when she receives a summons from her Uncle Carter to come and live with his family in the Amazon. With the company of formidable governess Miss Minton, she journeys from England to Belem and to the rainforest city of Manaus, where the Carters and their vicious twin daughters live ...
Advantages: Well compiled collection Disadvantages: Not all best tracks included
Stax is one of the most famous Blues and Soul record labels, which was responsible for recording some of the best known artist of that genre. It was formed in Memphis in 1957 by Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton as Satellite records but changed its name to Stax (a play on the owners surnames STewart and Axton). It will always be associated with the development of SouthernSoul, Chicago Blues and early funk as well as recording some of the first ethnically mixed bands, something very rare in that period. The label finally went bankrupt in 1976 but Fantasy Records eventually bought it primarily for its superb back catalogue and since 2004 they have been re-issuing some of the more popular recording s as well as some compilations.
?The Stax Story? is a massive four cd compilation of the best of the output from the famous Stax record label ...
Advantages: Fantastic Full-Length Dance Classics Disadvantages: A few substandard fillers...
'm telling you" - Donna Giles (Stonebridge mix)
Great, and, bizarrely, a remake of the theme from the stage musical "Dreamgirls" based on the story of The Supremes...
11. "Weekend" - Todd Terry
A very "Chicago" sounding track, as you would expect from Todd Terry, the boss of US house.
CD2
1. "Keep on movin'" - Soul II Soul (club mix)
This great track has always been a bit overshadowed by the follow up from Jazzie B and the friends, "Back To Life (However Do You Want Me)" with Caron Wheeler. Shame.
2. "Wishing on a star" - Fresh 4
A hundred people have done covers of this song, including, recently, "The Modfather" Paul Weller. This bare bones version is OK, nothiong special.
3. "Eye know" - De La Soul (the know it all mix)
That whisting song from the "Daisy Age"-ers, although I still prefer "A rollerskating jam"...

Album Notes
This three-disc set documenting the 1960s/'70s glory days of Southern soul is as impressive an anthology as one could want, balancing expertly between classic tunes by big-name artists and lost gems by cult favorites. Covering the soul scene as it developed in Muscle Shoals, Memphis, and elsewhere, TAKE ME TO THE RIVER moves from such iconic cuts as the Al Green title track and Aretha Franklin's "Do Right Woman Do Right Man" to milestones of a less ubiquitous nature (King Floyd's "Groove Me," Paul Kelly's "Stealing in the Name of the Lord") and obscure collectors-manna like The Masqueraders' "Let's Face Facts," carefully presenting as all-encompassing a portrait of this rich scene as even a three-disc limit will allow.
Album Reviews
Record Collector (magazine) (p.83) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]his set deserves to be heard by a much wider audience: in fact anyone with a spine to be tingled, a tear to be shed and a soul to be sanctified."
