Synopsis: Little Caroline Mitchell was spotted climbing into a car with a man that no one knew. She has not been seen since. Maggie can't help searching around for answers.
Review: I found this book quite difficult to read in the light of the Madeline McCann situation in Portugal. Having said this, it does address a number of current issues regarding abuse and the effect it can have on children and teenagers.
The story was a little predictable, although there was a twist at the end that I was not expecting. This is a straight-forward read with a convincing central character. I think it will appeal to teenagers wanting an easy, entertaining read but definitely not to adults or those who enjoy a challenge.
This is a simple, effective crime thriller for the 12 and over. ...
Advantages: Thrilling from the beginning Disadvantages: very creepy
Introduction
This is a psychological drama directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It is not one of his best-known films, but I think it deserves to be better-known - the atmosphere builds up slowly from the beginning and is chilling from start to finish, complemented by excellent camera-work. The film dates from 1951.
The director
Alfred Hitchcock was born in Leytonstowe, England and died in 1980. His film-making career began in 1919, and by 1926 had made his name in the industry with the silent film, The Lodger. He moved to Hollywood in 1940, and afterwards directed a string of films for which he is most remembered, including To Catch a Thief, Dial M for Murder, Rear Window, Psycho and The Birds. His final film was family plot in 1976.
The plot
Guy Haines (played by Farley Granger) and Bruno Anthony (played by Robert Walker) meet ...
Advantages: You'll never predic the end Disadvantages: The subject matter is harrowing
We Need ToTalk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver was a book that for some reason always caught my eye. Maybe it?s the striking front cover of a small boy staring endlessly out at you or maybe it was just the fact that so many people ad said so many positive things about it. Either way I knew that I just had to read it but despite this have only just got round to doing so, although it has been sat in my to read pile for quite some time.
I must say however that I am now extremely pleased that I stuck by my instinct to want to read this book because it is outstanding in every sense of the word. The book delivers on so many fronts and is more than worthy of the Orange Prize for Fiction, which it won in 2005.
The very nature of the book makes it one that is not only harrowing but also very enveloping and once you begin to read it you ...
