It is a fair judgment to say that it is a surprise that a girl group can experience the longevity that the career of the Sugababes has experienced. However from this album, their forth, it is clear that this is not a bad thing, whilst most pop groups loose the consistency or opt for covers by even the second album, the Sugababes have successfully delivered an album that is both diverse and original.
Whilst having always been a fan of their work, I feel that this album has raised the bar; it is an easy album to listen to with tracks such as Ugly and Obsession but also has those upbeat songs which grow on you every time you listen to them, such as the hugely popular Push the Button, Red Dress and Bruised. They also entail sensitive lyrics in songs such as Ugly and Follow me home, offering the softer and more vulnerable side of the group, which helps to give this album sincerity and life.
The album also has that familiar and unique Sugababes sound which so many of us can connect to, their distinguishable vocals and edgy tone helps bring the songs into a whole other level. You can feel the passion in the songs, whilst their three part harmonies blend together as always brilliantly.
The only criticism I can deal against this album is the track Follow me Home which I feel is slightly weak in both melody and lyrically, even though this is a merely a matter of taste, however their vocal performance, especially that of Keisha save it from disrupting the listen of the album.
I would recommend this album as a good buy, there’s enough range in the sound of the songs for even the most particular in taste to find they love it, it provides the strengths you hope from an established group of a unique yet familiar sound and a drive to push the bar higher and not remain in their comfort zone. Whilst the album has a feeling of fun, it sinks to levels of deeper thought in its lyrics making it an album for most moods.
