These Tanto Tempo Remixes are handled with impeccable taste by a creamy crop that includes ... more
Rae & Christian, the Truby Trio, Peter Kruder, Da Lata, 4 Hero and King Britt. Just as the New York-based Gilberto becomes more punchy in the live arena, these reconfigurations squirt tripping beats, boost bass frequencies and generally push towards a rippling Latin house sound. Gilberto's deft bossa vocal phrasing reaches right back to the 1960s, but her band, and now her remixers, are attuned to the electro reinvigorations that are currently sweeping through Brazil. Rae & Christian's "Bananeira" has a curious Bo Diddley stomp, with clipped trumpet answered by gruff trombone. Truby's "Sem Contencao" is given a hard bass-drum trounce, gaining an epic scale. Monoaural's "Mais Feliz" is governed by a minimalist bass prowler, drums kept to a vicious crack, showered with harp rivulets. Chari Chari's treatment of the title track has a direct simplicity: little more than bass, percussion layers and electro-textures. The common factor is that all these mixes ensure that Bebel's vocals remain sacrosanct, the very reason for each tune's existence. --Martin Longley

Advantages: Relaxing, refreshing Disadvantages: in portuguese
I first heard of Bebel Gilberto at a friend of mine. Whilst popping in for a drink, the CD was playing as background music and since they had just returned from an eventful 7 month travelling around the world, I thought that it was one of their findings. Enquiring about it, it had been bought in the local music shop - HMV.

The CD is a collection self written songs - for the most part - and a couple of oldie worldlie ones. The lot makes a beautiful CD full of emotions, gentleness and talent. Her voice is simply exceptional.
It is the best thing after a long day, sipping a glass of your favourite poison, relaxing, unwinding, and Bebel Gilberto in the back ground lulling you. You can almost hear the waves on Copacabana.

Whilst popping in for a drink, the CD was playing as background music and since they had just returned from an eventful 7 month travelling around the world, I thought that it was one of their findings. Enquiring about it, it had been bought in the local music shop - HMV. I am always on the lookout for different style and style that suits me. I am sometimes disappointed by what is in the charts and do not often find my happiness with what is played on the radio. You can find the CD just about anywhere, in HMV it was classified as Jazz - why ?? - so you may have to look around a bit. Amazon actually let's you listen to some of the songs online. However online I have seen it in all the major music companies. It won't get you back that far, look around and you can find it under 10 squid. So, treat yourself... pop the CD in the player, get yourself comfortable, hit play... and enjoy. Also, being the occasional user of the London Tube, this is one to pop into your CDman and it will make you forget where you are, where you are going, who is around you.... priceless... This is the first instalment of the lady, I await the second with anticipation.
Advantages: good number of songs, some up tempo to balance slow jazzy songs. Disadvantages: Absolutely none.
For those that don't speak Portuguese, you will find this album summery, silky, soothing and refreshing. Her voice is velvety, quite like a Brasilian version of Sade. The sound is Languid and lazy. Something to listen to for that laid-back, feel-good sensation. For those that do speak Portuguese, the same applies, though you will find her songs filled with nostaligia, love, samba and dreams of 'places far beyond' as sung in English in her 'August ...

, and soulful, to Gwen Stefani from the days of No doubt, which is altogether different in sound, excruciating-melody, but in a wonderful way. The style of her album is not a single one but varies between Ballads such as i'm like a bird her new single, and Hey,man, both of which contain incredible rhythms and undeniabley enchanting chorus'. the album also ends with three very latin bais tunes that simply ooze with intelligent writing and are evidence of her deep latin roots. The remainder of the albums is hip hop or verging on powerfully emotive slow rhumba like tunes comparible to BebelGilberto's debut release, 'tantotempo'. there is no question that this is an excellent album, but for a debut it deserves reverence! I recommend this album to anyone who appreciates intricately formed latin beats but also anyone whose head is turned by the sound ...

Personnel includes: Bebel Gilberto (vocals); Celso Fonseca, Luis De Monte (guitar); Joao Donato (piano); Robertinho Silva (drums); Joao Parahyba, Carlinhos Brown (percussion); Smoke City, Thievery Corporation, Amon Tobin, Mario Caldato, Jr. Recorded at Wah Wah Studio, Sao Paulo, Brazil; Gloria Mix Studio, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil; Dada Studio, Brussels. Bebel Gilberto was nominated for the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist. TANTO TEMPO was nominated for the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Best Musica Popular Brasileira Album. Bebel Gilberto is the daughter of Brazilian singer/guitarist Joao Gilberto. TANTO TEMPO, her debut release, brings a contemporary sheen to classic bossa novas. Acoustic accompaniment predominates, with the addition of occasional electronica, making this collection a perfect reflection of the late-20th century two-way street between traditional Brazilian bossa nova and the American producers who covet its easy, sexy sound. Gilberto's voice is assured and steady. As with other South American singers gaining attention in the States, such as Peru's Susana Baca, she's a model of restrained passion, her phrasing subtly and sensuously caressing her music. Gilberto sings mostly in Portuguese, but performs a few songs in English, such as the dreamy "August Day Song." "Lonely" finds her paired with Washington D.C. downtempo producers Thievery Corporation, while the classic "So Nice" is still the perfect airy, breezy hammock song. TANTO TEMPO is highly recommended for aficionados of both classic and modern Brazilian pop.
