I felt compelled to write a review of Requiem For A Dream simply because it blew me away. I had vaguely heard of it for a while; I knew that it was about drugs, it was supposedly good, and that was about it. However, I recently stumbled across it on my trusted font of cinematic knowledge, IMDb, and discovered that not only is it by the director of Pi (another critically acclaimed film); not only is the director, Darren Aronofsky, married to Rachel Weisz; not only is he the guy who's made The Fountain (that film which got booed off at the Venice Film Festival); but that it was also voted as one of the top 58 films of all time. I also read that the last fifteen minutes of this film is the most harrowing thing you'll ever see. I was interested.

The film itself is highly stylised. Aronofsky tries to a degree through surrealist imagery to create a realism where you become emotionally connected with the characters ...
Advantages: Energetic visuals and some original techniques overwhelm the viewer. Disadvantages: At it's core it's an update of "Reefer Madness".
There's a sizeable number of people who seem to almost worship this film. Who found the right mix of authenticity, camp value, and cool filmmaking techniques to declare Requiem For A Dream a modern masterpiece.
I am not one of those people.
Every once in a while a film comes along that is inexplicably embraced by filmgoers. Often it's part of a temporary addiction to a performer such as say Adam Sandler, but sometimes it extends to more serious minded filmmakers such as Quentin Tarrantino. Now Tarrantino stuck a chord with Resevoir Dogs and hit the motherlode with Pulp Fiction.
He then proceeded to play his sudden acclaim and fame all wrong and grab too much attention with public appearance, getting an over-top b-movie made (From Dusk till Dawn), helping out some friends and former co-workers with their films (Killing Zoe ...
